| '49 willys or '81 toyota
I have a freind that wants to trade me his '81 toyata pickup for my '49 willys pickup. Which would you want? The '49 willys pickup is all stock with little rust and it has new 31" bfgs and led lights. The toy needs a carb, new dash, and tires. But it has no rust and a new cluch. thanks. | The Toyota would be the easiest and cheapest to build if you're wanting a serious off-roader. I had less than $8K total in my '85 Xtracab.... dual cases, 4.88's, Detroits, 36" Irok's, chromoly axles, winch, bumpers, flatbed, suspension, etc. VERY capable truck (sold to RXCrawler here on RCC). I never owned a carb'd Toy, my '85 had EFI, so I can't really say.... some carbs work good, some run like crap and need constant tinkering. I had a carbed Samurai that worked great offroad for the most part. It would load up only when I stood the rig up almost vertical. The 22RE in the Toy never missed a beat no matter what position I put it in. I'd trade for the Toyota. Before I put any money into anything else I would look into a EFI swap.;) My ol' Toy. Kinda miss it a little. I know where RXCrawler lives, might steal it back someday. |

the willy for me, the toy would definately be cheaper and easier, but wheres the fun in that, I'd set the willy up with a small block ford/C6 combo throw some D44's at each end and what ever tire fits with the lift amount you want (I don't know if they're spring over or spring under, if its under, change it to SOA and you should clear 33's easy). The toy is a rare occurance without rust though, and may be worth it.

Well my plan is to put propane injection on the one I choose. So I wouldn't have any problems there. But I plan to run a 37"- 40" tire so with either truck it’s going to cost me a bit to build. It really comes down to body style and motors. The willys flat head is awesome and has tons of low end power but the 22r has a great reputation fo reliability and the after market.

Why a SUA? you can keep lift down by using flat springs with a spring over. you will get better flex out of SOA then 90% of SUAs.

Yeah, on most axles its only 4-5 inches of lift.

I would do an SUA because 1) to help fight axle wrap and 2) with flat springs under extreme articulation they will have negative arch which could fatigue and break the leaf.

| Which flat head does yours have? My L-134 in the '48 CJ2A made 60 HP stock... I'm getting ready to drop a 4.3Vortec w/propane in it. I'd stick with the willys, if for nothing more than the fact that there's a ton of 'yotas on the trails already. -WRM |

Defenitly Toyota. You'll be able to build the Toy into a FAR better wheeler easier and cheaper. Theres so many options for cheap swaps, junkyard swaps and a MASSIVE aftermarket supply. A few of the guys I ride with run Jeeps, well Jeep bodies with basically 3/4 or ton Chevy crap under them. They've got nearly double in their rigs compaired to what I've put in mine. When we ride, they break or get stuck and my little Toyota just keeps on truckin and ALWAYS drives me home. I'd be willing to bet,if you played your cards right and shopped around for the best deals, you could put $1500 in that Toy and you'd have a kick *** wheeler. Not including the $$$$ I put in buying my Toy,just the $$$$ in the build after it was retired from a work truck to a trail rig. Including the $$$$ I spent on my bender, oxy & acc. bottles and torch set and a few other tools I needed,I spent about $2500 to $3000. This is my Toy now...................... Concidering about half the money I spent on my build was buying tools,I can't complain the least. A guy can get by cheap, you just gotta shop around the BB's for deals and search the net for the cheap and sometimes free upgrade/swaps. Last edited by Reflection; 09-19-2005 at 01:03 AM. |

I'm not worried about the money part. I know a few junk yard owners and I have my sources for cheap aftermarket parts.

My dad raced his flattie with the L-Head for years before swapping a Chev 153 and 4 speed. It was better in a poker run he did that a Hemi powered CJ, simply because he could keep his rig on the trail.

I would keep the Willys and put Chevy running gear under it.
