Is my rig a trailer queen on 42s? Nope. Is it what many would consider "hard core"? Well, I can't quite answer that, but I think it depends on what you consider to be hard core. If large axles and big tires are your defining criteria, then no, my rig is not hard core. But if you think doing more with less, fabricating everything yourself, retaining true streetability in all conditions, and having the capability to successfully run trails you have no business being on would qualify as hard core... Then I think I fit the bill. ;) I've always liked the underdog so it's fun to see how far I can take my moderate looking rig with just 35s and a Dana 30. I like to consider it a sleeper since it doesn't garner much attention. And that's just the way I like it!

'01 Jeep TJ: 5 speed, 4.0L
- Custom built long arm suspension (radius arm front, semi-triangulated 4 link rear) with a bit of stretched wheelbase built in
- "One ton" over-the-knuckle steering
- Dana 30 front: Lock Right, alloys, 4.56s
- Dana 44 rear: full Detroit, 4.56s
- Stock t-case (so yes, my clutch gets a lot of use!)
- Poison Spyder cage
- Rancho RS9000 adjustable dampers
- 15x8 Trailreadys (had 15x10s at one point)
- 35x12.50 Maxxis Big Horns (finally ready for replacement after 3 years)
- Hand throttle, CO2, CB, Hi-Lift, etc.
- And a functional A/C!

I do trailer it do bigger events or ones that are far away, but I drive it to the trail frequently. I also drive it to work a lot. It's been all over Texas and last year I took it to Moab for the first time and had the time of my life. I'll be back there soon....

I eventually will put bigger axles under it. Maybe just some built 44's and 37" tires, but I may step up to one tons and 40" tires one day. I actually had a '79 Ford D60, 14FF, and set of 39.5 Iroks ready for it, but had to sell when I couldn't find a job fast enough. Tube fenders, more armor, and a 3 link front suspension are in the near future.

If you wanna know how that cage will hold up, check this out. I've got some better pics on my photobucket account but this is just one I found on the internet. I watched one of those PS cages get tested at SETTC and if there was someone in the passanger seat I don't think they would have lived.

Looks like it was a pretty violent rollover (backwards?). I'm not foolish enough to believe this will save in all conditions or that it's as stout as a full, conventional downtube cage, but it does provide more structure/safety than without it and I've seen rollovers in which they stood up the impacts rather impressively. If I ever decide to give up more interior room, I may build a new cage, but for now and for the way I wheel I think it'll be fine.

A cage is a cage, atleast you have one, to protect yourself. My crawler has a custom built cage with it all coming in from different directions right into the middle, i've yet to find out how the top will hold but the sides seem to hold fine.

How'd you bust the ARB/Gears?

Yeah all ARB air locker switches ( Was working for them at the time ) with the symbols wet and dry sanded off the covers, you don't want to see the wiring behind the panel.

The locker was set up by a ARB shop local to me about 5 years ago, it stated making a squealing nosie on the hi-way thought it was a belt pulled of into a dirt driveway and just taking it easy and it locked up on me doing 25mph, it had done about 80 000km up till that point. What i was told by the Diff specialist that there was a stress fracure in the pinon, so just its time i guess...

Im all for the fabricating! Mine has custom links, custom 4 link, custom cage, custom steering arm, shaved 14bolt rear, and whole bunch of other custom stuff! If your gonna bite the bullet and go with bigger tires and a bigger axles, If your gonna go 40's I think chromoly Dana 44's would be good, but if you plan on jumping it 3ft off the ground and just hammering down I recommend a set of ton's. I had chromoly 44 and would hammer down a year and half later i broke it twice, now I have a Dana 60 sittin in my shop that just got retubed (chunk moved to other side) ready to go in there, but im running 42's maybe that extra 2 inches it couldnt handle it, but I think chromoly 44 would be good for a set of 40's if your not gonna be hammering down.

I've got axles sitting in the backyard waiting for the next project which will have at least 40s on it. Here is what I had for 4 years until I sold it late last year.

Not quite the 40" requirement for the thread, but bigger than some that posted.

heres the latest one that i have been redoing. i added floors, center tunnel, skins, brake/tail lights, stereo, cb. i raised the seats, reworked the gauges, bent aluminum to hide the wiring. I need to finish painting it, make a hood, dimple die the roof and skins and get some new coilovers. I also ordered a 3'x5' stencil to paint the the roof

Got new shoes for my rig recently. I decided I won't go to bigger tires/axles for a couple years, but I needed new tires so I got some new 35" MTR Kevlars and decided I wanted lighter weight wheels so I sold the Trailreadys. I'll get Stauns eventually. It looks like a mall crawler now, but I'm okay with it. People have low expectations for mall crawlers....
