Griz's snowbashing motor with video now

Well it finally ran on the engine dyno last week. I have been working on this for a long time, the old saying "horsepower costs money" is very very true.

The specs
Coast High Performance 393ci stroked 351W
main girdle, steel crank, H-beam rods, forged SRS pistons
8.5:1 compression
custom Iskendarian Racing camshaft, roller lifters, Comp cams steel roller rockers
World Windsor iron heads, 2.02" intake 1.60" exhaust valves
Every ARP stud and bolt you can buy
high volume oil pump
Holley commander 950 injection, Accel 750hp fuel pump, MSD TFI distributor (so the computer can control timing), MSD 6AL

AND a Holley 174 powercharger roots blower with Price Motorsports Engineering intake manifold adapter

The numbers:
RPM HP Torque
3700 376 530
4000 407 534
4300 442 540
4600 472 539
4900 495 530
5200 520 527
5500 529 505
5800 538 489

These numbers were before the dyno was fully set up so he couldn't get numbers below 3700 rpm. We just threw a 750 cfm carb on it, locked in the timing at 18 degrees, threw the big pulley on the blower, and thought we see what it would do. I figure it is making about 3 psi of boost right now, the goal was at least 550hp at this altitude. The above number are corrected for sea level.

I caint wait to see what happens with it in the Bronc.

And here's why I need the horsepower. Snow, and lots of it. I love snow bashing more than anything else. Plus it'll be fun in the sand.

Is that Red Cone trail? Sounds like you got plenty of power now!!:)

joecrawler 04-04-2006 06:39 AM

wow, are you trying to make up for something being smaller than it should be down south.

jason 04-04-2006 07:05 AM

Post up the video!

reaganreagan 04-04-2006 07:13 AM

Sounds and looks like you have the horsepower you need.

No, that's Bald Mountain in Redfeather Colorado in Feb. Thanks, I think this will be enough to keep the tires spinning in 3rd gear now. 8)

Funny how people say that about the motor and my blue truck. Must be a jealousy thing cuz I'm just having fun in life MY way.

This should be just about right.

For those who may not be familiar, snowbashing through 4 ft of snow requires flotation and wheelspeed, much like mudding.

In order to get enough wheelspeed in 2nd gear (1st gear will just break stuff so I will be starting out in second and shifting into third) I run pretty high gears. It takes alot of horsepower and torque to keep the tires spinning fast enough to float across the snow (again, much like mudding).

My rig is setup very different from a rockcrawling rig, I run a C6 auto with 2.46 first, 2.45 second, 2.34 Bronco T-case gears, and 5.13 axle gears. That means overall gear reduction in second is only 29.5:1 and third is 17.5:1.

but it's all fun right? 8)

Thanks Mike. I've waited a long time for this, I've owned my Bronc for 19 years and I have finally gotten to a point in my life where I can build it the way I want.

You better get busy on that before you have to work on it in your retirement years! :flipoff:

Mr Glassman 04-04-2006 10:04 AM

Sweet set-up Griz, can't wait to see it all set up and putting that power to the wheels. Not very many people know about Bald mountain its a blast in snow! I use to be a resident of that area.

Thanks Glassman. Bald is a great trail, we hit it twice a year; in November and February.

Grizzly4x4 10-02-2006 06:33 PM

Hey, I finally uploaded the video. I know, I'm slow. I had alot of trouble with the guy who was supposed to tune the injection on the dyno so I finally just took it back. I'll have to tune it on a chassis dyno.

Enjoy.
