I have 21 out of my 22re, i don't think i'd be getting that once i swapped to a v8, probably about 15...or does the weight of the toyota make that much difference?

im LUCKY to get 15mpg in my 98 4rnr with the v6. usually its 12-13... thats heavy stop and go chicago traffic tho. still, suckass mileage.

i think i would get better mpgs if i dropped a sbc in the darn thing.

Yea right, going downhill with it in 5th gear at 55?!!

Best I ever got out of a 22r was 19 and that was milking it.

Swap a Nissan VG30 in it! I generally get 20 city and 25-27 highway at about 65mph in my little pickup. Plus, much more power then the 22re.

I'm wondering why you don't list it on C's list and pass it off as a good rock crawler project like nearly every other individual (in this wonderful valley of ours) with a Toyota P/U on it's last leg.

You do realize your straight 6 is never going to die now right?

Ignore my stupid carburator issues in this video, but here is my 4runner w/ the 350.

That's exactly what I get in my 4Runner. I do have 33's and stock gearing though.

My 1992 22RE 2WD pickup got an honest 29 as a daily driver. I miss that truck

Because i just put $1500 worth of tires and damn near a brand new oem/stock suspension on it, this was before the troublesome causing issues.

I'd be lucky to sell the truck for 1500...got 2300 into it...and if i was to get anything else it be a newer toy or a mid 90's power stroke ('96 ex.cab short box preferably), and i don't just have 4 grand laying around to cover the difference.

It was my crawler project, but i ended up getting a jeep commanche instead so i dumped some cash into keeping it as a good dd, as the truck is in good cosmetic condition for being 22 years old...i was going to sand it down and squirt some paint on it this summer but i think it'll be getting a powertrain overhaul instead

Well if you are going to go through with it stick with a 22re to avoid too much cost. The other "cheaper" option would probably be to find a wrecked S series from GM with the 4.3 and transmission.

As for your tires, you got ripped off horribly or upsized dramatically thus killing your Toyota.

I have had two sbc toys one 5spd and and one auto The auto was a 83 toy with a 350 and a turbo 400 trans with a adaptor to the transfer case. Hated that truck . The 5spd was a 89 with a built 327 with an adaptor to the stock toy 5sp loved that truck. the 83 I bought built. and the 89 I did the swap on had no problems with the ifs when I did my swap

Way back when, I had a '85 reg cab 4x4 SR5. 33" tires, 4:88 gears, TRD posi in the rear. The truck would get about 18 mpg on the freeways, probably 12-14 in stop and go traffic. The gears helped turn the bigger tires but they still strained the engine. It was so under powered I had a buddy with a 2wd S-10 pickup w/ the 2.8 and he was quicker!

Tires and suspension...only have like 400-500 into tires, about 600 into suspension stuff...then the rest is tool box, stereo, misc repair stuff...about 1500 total put into it.

I'm pretty sure a $400 tire bill on my toyota is awhole lot better than the $3000 tire bill on my jeep...

I don't see how you think it be cheaper to swap in a chevy 4.3 than an old carb'd engine w/out computer bs...i can always get a tbi kit and build up the v8 once i buggy out the toy, but an old carb'd v8 in a toy should/could get pretty good gas mileage

Was your 89 stock otherwise? (lift, tires, etc.)

Is this truck 2wd or 4wd? What did you replace suspension wise that was 600? Have you done a compression test?

If it was me I would fix the known issues first. Then pull the valve cover and check out the timing chain guides. Replacing a timing chain on a 22r is about as easy as it gets, pull the radiator and there is plenty of room. A lot easier then an engine swap.

Eff the 2jz swaps, if the motor was as good as its said to be why wouldn't japan have used it in their race cars.... use a 4.7 out of a new one or rebuild 22re. i have a 22re and they last forever. lcengineering has a ton of parts for the rebuild too.

I've seen wrecked S10's Blazers and pickups for a few hundred with a good power train that includes the computer bs. Your best option still would be to repair/rebuild your current engine or find another. Gearing will get you more than a V8 swap and you'll break a lot less. To do it right you would need to spend more than you would buying one that's already built. Ask this question over on Pirate and check the responses.
