Default Air intake question

I have a 5.9l 360 nopar.. I have swapped my stock air cleaner for an old style polished edelbrock air intake with a K&N filter. I work at advance auto and we had one "defected" but it was defected because the person bought it not knowing about it, so needless to say i got a good deal.

Anyway... I fear that with as far back as the intake sits (almost against the fire wall) that its going to suck in more hot air and do more harm than good. I seemed to pick up a bit of power, which is cool. Cant really tell on the gas mileage until i check it with an OBD scanner. What are your guys thoughts? Looking for thoughts on the hot air situation, not preference in parts, etc. thanks!

It's only hot air until you start moving.

K&N filters are bad. They don't filter unless they're dirty as heck, which is why they flow better at first. Nevermind the silicone oil drops that make their way into your engine...

So i would have been better off with the filter that came with the air cleaner? Its essentially one of our purolator filters, factory type deal. Ill just return the k&n tomorrow and run the stock one i guess. I knew i was paying for the name when i got it.

Now as far as gas mileage... Is it going to help me at all? I mean 2-3 miles per gallon are good with me. Hard to tell when i dont have a working fuel gauge.

get a reusable dry filter or a paper filter. AS mentioned, K&N's suck as far as doing the job they are there for, which is filtering any kind of particles that could make their way into the engine. You probably didnt gain any power, you just think you did because you can hear it sucking air now

Back when I had some $ and we ran dirt late models we went from the K&N to Wix paper filters with an outer wear. A bunch of difference. Should relate to street use.

I ended up with a purolator classic round style filter. With the new air cleaner on i turn my head to replacing suspension parts that are so old and rusted that i feel like its a matter of time before it falls to peices. A local mechanic whom i send alot of business to says hes going to let me know thursday how much stuff he has i need that i can have before i dump a shit load into new shocks and bushings.

A paper filter and an upside down air cleaner lid is all you need.
