What's the maintenance costs on your guys JettaTDi?
The first 20,000 miles are free maintenance from the dealer and I'm at 18,000. Oil changes every 10,000 miles (synthetic) will be nice. I don't expect the maintenance costs to be too high.

I know this is kinda the opposite, but....

I just got back from a 2400km round trip from the middle of Saskatchewan out to Kelowna, British Columbia in a 2012 Ram with a Hemi.

1200km with no trailer it averaged 19.6 mpg

On the way home pulling a small U-Haul it halved to 9.8mpg!! 70mph averaged when not in the twisty mountains. That's over $26 an hour to get home. Awesome!!

Should have kept the Cummins...

Like Tim said, 10k service intervals. I got 30k free maintenance. From what I hear there aren't many issues with the TDI or the DSG trans. I'm at 32k and the brakes still have a ton of pad left. So far, everything is sound on the car.

Only issue I had was the tires, I bought the base model TDI so it came with Hankook H725a tires, they cracked all the way around the sidewall just above the bead, very similar to the Dynapro recall. Lucky I didn't have a blow out. I replaced them with Michelins.

I drive a 95 Toyota Camry 2.2L 5-speed with 170K that I lug around town and back roads and am rewarded with a properly calculated (I fill it every week and do my math) 27-29mpg. Interstate I can easily do 35+mpg at 75 in mountainous areas.

I've got about $1400 into it, and it's not rusty.

Probably worth mentioning that I deleted the A/C, thats gotta be worth something.

The fiance has an 04 Civic EX 2-door, no ABS, 1.7L 5-speed with 150K that we drove 3000 miles in a week-long road trip and got 37-38mpg with the cruise at 75 and the A/C on most of the time. I can get 31-33 around town if I drive it like an old man. The fiance manages about 27mpg with, uh, less than conservative driving. I've done some hidden stuff to make it handle decent and feel tight and we've got almost $6K into it.

I bought my wife Pruis C. Smaller then the normal prius but works great. we average 49-55 per tank. Last trip to see my dad down the highway was 38.9 mpg @ 73mph. I drive it to school everyday. Goes 400-410 miles on a tank.

I heard that service for the DSG is pricey. Hmm. Might look into one later on.

Yes it is but can be done by yourself. I wanted the 6 speed manual but no 2011 manuals left so I grabbed this one.

I'd stay away from anything VW. I had a 03 VR6 GTI and it had problems all the time. Was in the shop for over 7 months in the 4 yrs I've owned it. One of our very good friends has a 2012 GTI and it's on its last leg, not being hot dogged or anything, just a commuter and driven by a 40 yr old lady. Another co worker had a 09 or 10 TDI jetta. Somehow it dumped all the oil while on highway, engine locked up and was going to cost 9k to fix, Lucky that's all he owed on it and knew the dealer very well, traded it in and got a 12 GTI without neg equity. That car now has problems too.

I'll stick to my Toyotas. Now have a Sequoia with 4x4 and the 5.7l it gets 13 city and 20 highway. I mainly drive my Avalon touring it gets 20 city and 30 highway. My previous Toyotas: RAV4 sport v6 got the same mileage as the Avalon. Also had a corolla it got over 30 city and 40 highway. None of which I've ever had problems with

You are wrong there. Volkswagens have MANY faults and people get sucked into the false economy of owning a diesel vehicle. When they do go sideways they are far more expensive to repair. Also vw dealerships as a whole are usually very difficult to deal with if you have a warranty claim. You usually have to phone vw HQ to get anywhere.
I currently own 2 tdi jettas (one wagon) and it seems like im starting a new career in keeping them functioning! Door modules, heated seat issues, struts every 2 years, de carboning the intake, etc, etc. Parts are $$$ and the electrical systems are failure prone. The dpf seteup alone can cost thousands to repair. I tried talking the wife into a mazda3 but she loves the tdi's. Lucky me :(

All car manufacturers have a plethora of issues with their vehicles, some year/models worse than others. As a whole cars in general are more reliable than in the past. However, with all the crap they put on cars these days it's no wonder they have so many issues. Safety I can understand but all the gadgets are unnecessary fluff. Bottom line, people want cool stuff, comfort and convenience, that comes at a price.

Edit: I was able to negotiate a good deal on an esp warranty (100k) so hopefully it will come in handy when things start to go south.

Got a 90 civic hatch,1.8L gsr motor with Y1 trans, super quick. High rpm's at 75mph (4000) in 5th,car weighs around 2100lbs,right around 1hp per 10 pounds. The motor doesn't really have to work that hard with the low geared trans. I get around 31 to 32mpg flogging the hell out of it with a smile on my face.
