I can't say enough good things about a fit. Drive like Mario Andretti and get 39-40 mpg, drag my camper up and down the east coast and still get 35

I'm driving a 2013 Golf TDI at the moment. Not my first. My family has been driving VW, Audi, an Porsche he since I was a kid. I've yet to have any major problems with any of them. Currently, I am only averaging 45mpg, but the motor is t fully broke in yet. By the time I hit 15k on the ticker, and if I drive conservatively, I expect to see 50+ mpg.

2011 VW Jetta TDI here. Seems to be a pretty decent car. Worst mileage I've seen around town is 33 mpg. Average highway mileage at 75-90 mph is 40-43 mpg. Best I've seen was 48.5 mpg going to Dallas and the funny part is I wasn't trying to hyper mile it at all....and it included some stop and go. I've never hand calculated the mileage to confirm the trip computer 'cause it's a company car. I just pay attention to the mileage 'cause I'm curious.

The thing I'm not a fan of with this car? The DSG auto gearbox. It shifts crisply and all, but at low speeds it's positively awful. Heavy engine braking and then all of a sudden it freewheels. I guess that's what you get when you don't have a torque converter!

My '01 Dodge Cummins 4x4 (also an auto) gets 14-16 mpg around town, usually 18-20 on the highway with a best of 22 a couple times when I'm trying to get good mileage. I hand calculate for the truck 'cause the programmer really screws with it. Pretty pleased with it for having 208,000 miles on it.

I went out for a drive to hit up the BBQ joint that I like so much. I reset the average MPG and MPH counters and this is what I got in return. It was only 50 miles in each direction so I didn't bother with filling up before leaving then filling back up and doing the math, but so far the 'puter in the car is pretty accurate.

Road conditions: heavy but steady traffic. I was able to set the cruise control on 75 and kept it there for 95% of the trip. No wind, roads were dry. Just my fat arse in the car. Take THAT, VW tdi!

Nothing has changed except for a small bar in the corner. Nothing on tap but plenty of good bottled selections.

Excellent numbers sir!

On another note, I had to replace my tires due to some major issues.

I found this on my right front tire a few weeks ago. Put the car up on the rack and found the same thing on the inside of left front tire all the way around.

I did some snooping and found that there were several complaints about the same thing on this particular tire, it's the Hankook Optimo H725a (size 205/55R16H, DOT # 1GRP DY H). All complaints were the same size and DOT #. I contacted the NHTSA to see if there were any recalls but none were noted. I hear the Dynapro M/T had a similar issue and a formal recall was issued by Hankook. I also contacted the tire company and was told that I must have run over something or ran them with extremely low air pressure. That's BS... I check my tire pressure once a week as well as all the vehicle fluids. No manufacturer assistance was authorized. Grrr...

Anyhow, I replaced them all with Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3's. I noticed the mileage has dropped compared to the old tires. I know the diameter of a new tire is larger than one with 30k on them but even compared to the mileage when my car was brand new, I'm short approximately 1-2 MPG. Not that big of a deal though, the Michelins are quieter, corner better and are rated for 60k tread life compared to the 35k on the old tires. That more than makes up for it in my eyes.

I had an 02 VW Beetle Tdi. Used to regularly drive from Calgary to Vanvouver through the Rockies and get 4.4L/100km or about 52 mpg. Averaged 110 kph or about 68 mph. Was a great car. No problems.

Ran over the mountains to the west side of WA in my wifes 94 22re 5 speed 4runner on 33's with 5.29's. Averaging about 75 we got just over 16 mpg. Considering the rig cost us about $1500 total we can buy an absolute crap load of gas with the money we aren't spending on car payments and increased insurance costs.

I hear you guys w/ the tdi's. I used to own a MK IV Jetta TDi. Pretty much stock, I used VR6 coils on Bilstein struts and it had a Rocket Chip re-flash. It pulled like a big block and would consistently deliver 53 MPG on highway runs and mid 40's around town.

I'm pulling around 11 L/100km's now. Cold temps and my downstream o2 sensor shitting the bed aren't really helping.

I was surprised to find that our 2013 Chevy Spark was averaging about 39mpg combined. It does about 37 city and 42 highway. I have the manual version, which I might add is the second cheapest car you can buy in the US right now: $12,170. First place goes to the tin can known as the Nissan Sentra $11,990 (with complimentary features like a two speaker radio and... nope, that's it). The Spark might be small, but it does come with four speakers, not to mention the standard alloy rims and power windows. They say it was only supposed to get 32,28 and 36 combined. I drive it average. When I push it or drive conservatively it only varies about 3 mpg. There's not much to change, it only has a 1.2L engine. I am 6'3" and I have about five inches of headroom and you can fit an adult comfortably behind me (we do a carpool with four grown adults in this car). We are just about to hit 10,000k miles on it. There is an alternate route through metro Utah that I can take, which has a speed limit of 55mph. The car could be geared a bit better for the freeway and it would improve mileage. However on this stretch of road, it really zones in to it's most efficient speed and I can get about 85mpg average. Just thought I would say something since I found this thread because I have been truly surprised by this car. To also suit the needs of this post, Chevy also now sells a turbo diesel version of the Sonic, which is rated at 46mpg highway, but two people I know who have them say they average around 50 combined city/highway.

My 98 4R gets about 19mpg....and I fill it up about once a month. Does that count as high mileage?

Another TDI Jetta wagon (09) here.

My wife drives it and loves it. Mid 40s MPH seems to be what she reports.

Other than expensive maintenance cost, it's been a great car for her.
