Default SDS' 72' burban breathing cummins

John decided he wanted a retro DD and thought it would be fun to build a whole truck in about 6 weeks and make the 16 hour drive to the West Coast shoot out.

So we've been heavy at it the last couple weeks and figured I'd get this posted on here.

Johns been tackling the truck every evening and working on his upcoming home on the weekends during the day, I've been coming out on the weekends and doing the wiring at my work.

I don't have alot of before pictures so get creative lol.

Picture a 97 dodge cummins ranch truck, straight body, shot interior and a flat bed. 5.9 motor with some miles!

Then we take this cherry 72 burban and start doing work

We quickly stripped the dodge, pulled the running gear and got to work.

Trans was rebuilt along with the monster Dana 80 rear axle. John and myself tore the motor apart and check the internals and made sure we were in the green for future add ons.

Once that was down, what was a dodge got rolled underneath the burban.

John blew out the rivets holding the rear section of the frame, cut the unneeded section out and blew the old body mouts off, then rolled it forward almost 25" to adjust for wheelbase.

The motor however was about 7" to far forward so he had to drastically cut the frame out to move it back and keep the a/c happy.

Using what he cut out he was able to keep it as clean as possible. To keep it as stock as possible all the old body and bumper mounts were cut off and reused

The 5.9 is a rather easy motor to get running when the ecu is ditched. However you loose the tach and regulation functions. We wanted to
Keep the power of the alternator do we had a local shop add a regulator and built in tach.

Motor and frame got a new coat of paint and the under carriage, wheel wells and hood got a coating of lizard skin and ceramic to reduce heat and noise.

Then we got the body remounted and the front clip and brought it back to johns.

Tonight we got the fender wells cut and installed, I cut the dash for a DVD/Nav unit and we got some sound denting material in on the floors.

Johns has a bunch more to do and I'll get more updates as they come.

John tried to fit the factory dodge tank but because of the shortended wheelbase it wouldn't fit. So he got a rear mounted suburban tank yesterday and the boys are painting it today.

I will get a picture update this weekend as we try to get the small items hammered out so we can get her running.

This rig has been alot of fun since the thought conception a month or so ago when I started looking for donors. A huge thanks to William(RCBros) as his build thread abilities and all of his help with the re-wire will make this build possible on the 4 week timeline that we have to be able to take it to the West Coast Shootout in a few weeks.

The Burb was rescued from under almost a half inch of dust about a year ago in an old barn, surprisingly sitting in there for more than 20 years kept everything well preserved. A wash job/ good buffing and a new carpet kit was all the original paint and interior needed to give it the true diamond in the rough feel.

The newer donor chassis(97' Dodge 2500 5spd. 4x4) Well lets just say its price reflected its well used condition. Ive had several cummins trucks, just never had to work on any of them. Lets just say that after getting most all of the oil sepages stopped up and repairing all of the worn broken parts in the truck- the chassis is now in superb condition and handled very nice going down the road.

Gotta get back to work. Will try and get more info in the thread as time allows- though im sure most of you can figure out that between full time work, family, and getting this rig completed on a 4 week build schedule- there just isnt alot of extra time left to post.

Thanks again William for sharing the building enjoyment And thanks for the good words guys!!

The dodge tank didn't work so a newer suburban tank will do. The fill neck is in the wrong spot so someone thought welding a new one onto a used tank would be fun!

The core support got butchered for the radiator

We got the core support and radiator in and installed, fuel tank is in and were modding a new fuel spout.

Tomorrow I get to have some fun and we'll be wiring the truck up.

Well we got closer yesterday but fatigue (for me at least) set in and we'll have to take another evening to finish wiring.

We opted to mount both batteries in back so John made a battery tray and got to work on that.

I spent most of the day in the engine bay and by the evening the wired were at least inside ;)

All the lights and necessary gauges and items the motor needs are inside and being powered by a custom panel I built.

It'll be a few days and this truck will breathe diesel yet again!
