That looks like a fun little grass roots event! I've been thinking about trying out either a drift school or rally school to get a taste of some actual motorsport outside of my living room (just sim racing), Theres nothing like the real deal.

Haha yup Casey those are exactly the kind of events I used to go to!
Be prepared to sell your SIM rig and take out a loan for a decent learners drift missile plus tires and track fees and more tires... Plus breaking stuff...
You see why I dont anymore lol
Also specific to San Diego there are no tracks inside of 3 hours drive. Unless you count a small go kart track 2.5 hours away.
The one in the vid (grange) is actually like 20 min from proline by the fire. Oh yeah I guess technically that's a kart track too lol

***LAboy I just watched again this time with sound.
CRINGE
please no music and euro beat is so... Ughh. Sorry but not a fan.

if i still had my AE86 and some tires i would offer ride alongs if you came down. but... :(

ok i cant stand it anymore... here are pics of my babies i miss so dearly...

first one (the gentleman)
stock motor with mild HKS intake cam and almost the entire Techno Toy Tuning menu thrown at the suspension
she was in great shape full interior daily driver
http://i50.tinypic.com/11hexrk.jpg

second one (the savage)
20v with throttle trumpets and header
entire Powered by Max suspension prototyped on this car
straight up race car, gutted interior and full weld-in cage... still drove it on the street occasionally :)

i miss them both but the first one had the most potential to be my ideal AE86. balance was incredible. if i could put the drivetrain and suspension from car 2 into car 1, match made in heaven.
i need another one someday... desperately. once you drive one of these, nothing else comes close. nothing.

I do love the 86, saw a panda one in Hakone last Christmas and I about blew my lid

I'm curious as to how they compare to the NA miata, since those can be had in nice shape for $5k and a nice 86 is like 15.

Miatas are faster hahaha
But shorter wheelbase so even snappier when sideways.
But they have independent rear suspension too so... Better for autocross and grip driving.
The ae86 solid rear yota axle is great with a spool and hardened ring and pinion.
I had adjustable heim jointed links on mine too and it was so solid and bulletproof.

I will say miatas can be had for WAY cheaper (your price comparison super accurate), and the experience is similar enough.
