Jeep Liberty CRD

Thought i would share my rig. The liberty CRD’s are fairly rare in the US and are one of a handful of modern diesel suv’s. It has a 2.8L inline 4 that makes 160hp/300 ft-lbs stock.

Mines turned up a bit. I have a custom built GTB2060 turbo in the stock CRD housing and do my own tuning. It should be around 220hp/400 ft-lbs now, and that is at 6500’ above sea level.

Just saw this post 2 months later. My dad had a CRD Liberty and I love that thing. It's the only way I would drive the Liberty, I'm not a fan of the body style but it's a diesel so that makes it cool.

I like it! Forgot they made a few diesels. Slushbox or row your own gears?

They were only available with the auto. I wish they had a stick.

Looks great, as a former JK owner I love to see people do things with the "other" Jeeps as well.

That looks pretty cool! Much better than the new Jeep truck for sure!

Jeep Liberty CRD

Forgot about this thread.

So the bad news. This thing threw a rod back in november. Well, really it was just knocking and I thought it was a dropped valve, which is very common with this motor, so i tore it down to see the damage. When i pulled the head, all valves were in tact so I got the head freshened up and started bolting it back together.

Well, when i first tried to crank it over once it was ready, the rod finally fully let loose and windowed the block. This thing had always been a pain in the ass so I decided to part it out instead of trying to fix it and hope it didn’t cause me more headaches.

I ended up replacing it with a 2011 Lexus GX460 with 72k miles:

The GX460 is based on the 5th Gen Toyota 4Runner, but has a 4.6L V8 and full time awd system. All of the suspension and a lot of the skid plating and armor is cross compatible with the 4Runner so there are tons of aftermarket goodies out there for it.

That sucks. I had a coworker with a CRD a few years ago. Dont think he had more than 50k miles on it when the turbo went out.

They are really crappy. I put a lot of “love” into mine and had done all of the preventative maintenance, but still crapped the bed at only 125k.

People said i would miss it. Not in the slightest. It was a cool vehicle but not worth the headaches.

@mass-hole the Lexus looks super sharp and I have heard about the underpinnings being basically a four runner. Looks like a good deal. Any mods so far?

Nothing so far besides a F-sport grille and an auxiliary transmission cooler. I used it to tow my travel trailer and, while the coolant never even hit 200, the transmission was in the 240’s multiple times.

Thats the top of Wolf Creek Pass here in Utah at 9600’. It does well.

Its almost time to buy tires so I am trying to decide if I wanna move up to a 32 or 33” and new wheels.

Surprised the trans runs so hot. Don't those newer Lexi already have a decent sized external cooler?

No external cooler. It has a liquid to oil cooler in the radiator end tank. After that tow I added my own air cooler and welded up a bracket:

I also bought some blizzaks in a 255/70R18 which is a 32.1” vs the stock 30.5”
