how do you know what trucks have 3/4 or 1 ton axles? on auto trader they have the choice of CK 1500, 2500 and 3500.

Hey stang killa! What are you looking to do with this truck, a full size is great and all but in the wood they suck, a one ton axle front hast 14 bolt holding on the diff cover, they will not be in a blazer unless someone did it after market, not even the military k5 had them, you can get a old military k30 truck sometime cheap on auction from governmentliquidation.com but you will have to go get it and it will be deisle. It will be a 1ton truck though, a dana 60 front end is worth about anywere between 1000.00 and 1800.00 for a chevy and coporate chevy 14 bolt rear end 1 ton is worh about 300.00 to 600.00 I have links to disk brakes for rear ends, hydrobost brake conversions, all sorts of stuff,

I also am into 66-77 Box Broncos I have a 77 with a full cage and all the godds for rock crawling, they would be my choice for a big project for a crawler toy but I am patrial I have had 13

I also have a XJ and it runs 33 MT baja MTZ and it is awsome daily driver weekend weeler , these things have awsome flex and are very stable, there is a ton of mods you can do for them, Check out naxja.com you can find them on there used and sometime set up fairly nice to get ou started at a good price,

If it were me and I were to pick between the jeeps it would be the XJ cherokee,

Did you mention the type of terrain you wheel in? Open trails or tight stuff?

I would probably choose a Toy, Samurai, or an XJ....each can be had in your price range.

A straight axle Toy is probably the most robust rig as they are well overbuilt. I'm assuming you'll be doing your own repairs and such otherwise your budget will get eaten up rapidly. Any of the vehicles mentioned by all have good parts availability.

Do you feel more comforatable working on a Toy motor or a SBC?......could play a part in the decision.

If you want a rig for light wheeling, most will do decent and you may want something you, your family or friends are familiar with or have parts for.....something to consider.

That is a nice truck, but you need a 2500/3500 to get the heavy duty components. most of those are gonna have a dana44 front with a 14 bolt rear, turbo400 trans, etc. by spending a little more up front you'll have less carnage to deal with later!

the 3/4 ton are k20 and k30 or 2500 and 3500. you can easily tell if they are 3/4 or 1 ton with the 8 lug nuts on the wheel.

yes you can get a single cab 1ton or 3/4 but it is a longbed.

you should get a stick, the sm465 is near indestructable and its commonly reffered to as the "granny 4 speed."

if you buy a k5 you will have to do an axle swap if your serious about wheelin. the come with 3.08 gears which is awful for anything over 33 inch tires. trucks often come with 4.11. good for 35's.

just paint this one:

Kinda hard to tell from picks about the ton diffs, unles you can see them up close, a front ton has kingpin style knuckels instead of balljoints, if you see a truck that says ton and you see two little "ears" one on either side the the differntal housing in the front it is a corporat 10 bolt basically half ton with 3/4 outers and they are JUNK!!!!!!!!!! never get a 10 bolt!!!!!!!!!! a dana 44 is better but is still not a ton dana 60 BUt keep in mind a dana 44 also has a 10 bolt cover on the front but there is definate difference in apperance, do a search on the three on the web in the pics and download several good shots of different angels. If you are gonna crawl and trail ride though I would recommend that yo get a Early Bronco or a Xj up grade either one to full width axles dana 44 front and 9 inch rear 488 gear to 538 gear I my self run a 538 gear, run a set of 35 or 36 BFG or Mikey Tompson MTZ Did you check out NAXJA.com

You have a PM

dana 44 = 10 bolt i wheel the crap outta my 10b front. and rear for that matter. just dont be full throttle on the rocks and youll be fine. however if you go bigger than 35's at least get chromos shafts or something.

Dana 44 has a much stonger carrier and has larger spindles than a 10 bolt. I have actually seen many 10 bolt spindles break, they are a weak point. Plus you need to take some time and shave those rediculus ears off LOL A 10 bolt rear will come out if you breadk it because all that holds it in is a cheasy little clip in the thin walled carrier. A 9 in has backiing plates on the outside if you break a 9 in (IF) you can still get off the trail or at least the axle wont come out and cause ofther damage.

10 bolt and dana 44 are near the same. The spindles, hubs, Knuckles, and outer axle stubs are interchangable . the 10b and d44 have near the same size carrier and the other differences are negligible. like the axle shaft has more splines, but they will both break under the same situation and the axle tubes are slightly thicker. as for the c-clips, poor idea i know, but the center pin in the carrier holds the shafts tightly in place. you have to lose the set screw then somehow the giant center pin fall out and the shaft move inward then the c-clip fall out. or they clip can break somehow but its tucked nicely away into the axle tube out of debris way. as for the 9in the only thing holding your axles in is your brakes am i right?

we're also telling him to get a 3/4 ton to avoid the govlock carrier in the rear.

(like 1988+)with 1 ton axles and and a regular cab? what years started the fuel injection? and can i get 1 ton axles, regular cab 4x4 auto in those years? or are the fuel injected models IFS? dont want that.
