| recomendations for first 1:1? under $5000?
looking for first 1:1 what im looking for, must (prefered) be a jeep or chevy, cost less than 5K...well lets say 8K. id like to run 35s or 37s (with the appropriate lift) id like not to have to swap axles, will be a trail/ light crawler. ie the largest rock face i would attempt to climb would be no more than 2 maybe 3 feet high. also must have a pretty good aftermarket available, and parts not too hard to find/costly. will be hacked,(comp cut, exo) but will remain street legal. RCC's thoughts/ideas? |

get a yj, put a 4 inch lift and 33's, 35's or 37's would be overkill on a jeep imo!!

maybe an older 1ton chevy. 37's shouldnt be a problem for the 1ton running gear.

Get yourself a Jeep with an inline 6, parts are plentiful, and pretty good on gas. There's a magazine that I get, I thinks it's called 4Wheel Drive and it has absolutly EVERYTHING for jeeps and good prices. I personally drive an amc eagle wagon with an 258 jeep motor, really powerfull and good gas milage. As for your wheels, I recommend super swampers. I may be wrong on this, but I think that super swamper carries a life time warranty. Good luck!

I also have to say XJ, they are cheap and make a great offroader. But you can also get a fairly nice stock TJ for $8,000 on Autotrader, or at least where i live. but XJ's were probably less and with the extra money you could lift it and do all that stuff like you want.

YJ all the way. I have a 90 Wrangler and love it. I have had it for ober 8 years. More after market parts you can shake a stick at. XJ's nice, but to much sheet metal to me. And they are unibodies....Takes alot of reinforcements to have them last over time. Just get a bone stock 90 or newer YJ.... Depending on how much street time you see. If you never drive it on the street. Just get the 4cyl. If you see alot of street time get the 6cyl... But if you can find them for the same price get the 6cyl all the way. I wheeled mine and it was my daily driver for over 5yrs on a 4cyl.... Only thing I hated was driving to the trails or parks and having to down shift to 3rd or even 2nd gear on the highway. Cheap Mods....2in Springlift... TJ flares and some 33's. Do a CV shaft in the rear with a belly up skid plate. Some Lock Right lockers front and rear. You'll be set for some time. |

i agree with run2jeepn. a yj would be a great choice. 2nd would be an 85 toyota four runner. you could also find a tj in your price range. Last edited by BOWTIE; 06-15-2007 at 05:03 PM. |

He said..... and I've got less than 8k in my build and it's far from being "hack" I'd have to agree with Unimoger,a Toyota fits the bill. Once set up right, you can FLOG 35's-37's,even 38's all day easily. Mine might not be as road freindly as my 01 3/4 ton Dodge but it is street legal and I do drive it on the road.

k5s with 35s are pretty good just cant have the govlok in teh back youll blow that up so fast. i say find you a 3/4 ton 73-87 chevy. parts a very plentiful and dirt cheap. water pump 16 bucks. calipers 28. 14b rear axle 150. the 350 is the best motor ever made, why do you think they put it in jeeps?

for your first 1.1 try not to get to wild with it.. find you a good truck i would say a 80 90 model ranger or broncoII and drive it... I have a broncoII and 2 rangers running right now 87 ranger and broncoII and a 01 ranger(moms truck) and thay have lasted thro my family and we do pound on them... |

IMO a 73-87 chevy/gmc 3/4 or 1 ton would really be a good choice. you can get them fairley cheap and parts are plentiful as well as interchangeable between years and makes. You would already have a heavyduty driveline and with Bushwacker cut out flares you can run 40s with no extra lift.
