From what the internet says It goes like this:
Limited
Pioneer
Sport
Laredo

JW Im look at a 2dr 4x4 1988 Limited (4speed auto)and just wanted to know which is the best, Im pretty sure its not a np231 :x.and Im also pretty sure its a dana 35 in the rear.

except for option packages they are the same identical vehicles

the limited came with a NP242 transfer case and NO vacuum disconnect front axle.

I like the NP242, it has part time high and low 4wd AND a full time highway high speed 4wd, it is marginaly weaker than the NP231 but not enough to mae me worry.

It is problem ridden is all, and makes the housing weaker. Im running the 242 in my cherokee trail rig.

TLTCrawlin 07-09-2007 05:32 PM

so if I dont really beat on it, since it is my DD, I shold be fine with NO vacuum disconnect front axle

you dont need it, if you have the np242 TC. if the TC shift plate has 3 4wd positions its the 242, if it has 2 positions then its the NP231 either way its fine

TLTCrawlin 07-09-2007 05:46 PM

Okay, its got 190k miles :| Im still going to look at it.

TLTCrawlin 07-09-2007 10:34 PM

2x I just love having high and low and full time 4wd imo way better than the 231 just might not be as tough

part time is not designed to be used all the time, never to be engaged while on dry pavement

JohnJohn 07-10-2007 11:15 AM

Needs one of three things replaced to fix the oil leak. Clean the area around filter housing, rear of valve cover/firewall, and rear main seal are where motor and tranny touch. Use some Simple Green or even a high end degreaser, but be careful with that stuff. Rinse and let dry.

1st: replace the "O" rings in the oil filter housing (dealer parts) $7

2nd: replace the valve cover gasket ("RightStuff") auto parts store $12-15

3rd: replace rear main seal (up to you if you do it or someone else)

Most people go for rear main right away, "because they always go out". That's not true. Check the other things first.

During slipper driving conditions use this rule:

Part Time use only PART of the TIME
Full Time use FULL TIME

Thanks but its actually coming from the oil cap.. My dads really mechanical and he says it just needs some easy work done. It goes straight and smooth at 70mph. and gets about 21mpg highway. It mis fires because the spark plugs havent been changed in forever, and he gave me some copper cores im gonna put on, and then the air filter, I can gaurntee is NASTY. It has a new dist. cap, and thermostat.

Ok, thats what I thought it meant, cuz theres a description on the visor to use in only slippery conditions. ;-)

Gotta say X3 here, we've had a base model '88 (Dad's first XJ), '90 Larado (Dad's second, but with the notorious Beenwrecked ABS system), '92 Briarwood (Little Sister's, with a Chrysler designed ABS), and '98 Limited (mine, with no ABS"thumbsup" ) all with the 4.0l/AW4/242. One of the best setups to have in the midwest since you have the 4FT for most road conditions and 4PT and 4Lo just in case.

xjman 07-10-2007 12:40 PM

You bought it?

Awesome if you did, I love my XJ.
