project CJ 5 heres the next rig i plan on building. the mockup is just a quick drawing i drew up on some poster board and cut out. its not perfect. i just kinda drew it off of memory and will be doing more research when it comes time to actual building time. the fenders are also cut to how i will be building it. plans for the build are MRC axles steel C channel frame custom front motor/transmission that scale transfer case, cant remember who sells it. 4 linked suspension fully detailed interior not sure what else, always open to suggestions but kinda want to keep it somewhat simple as i'm new to scratch building with styrene heres a teaser picture of what it should look like. wheelbase should be around 9.5in http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0277.jpg |
small update for anyone interested. just spent the past couple hours working on the body for my CJ 5 and i realized i dont have the patience that some of you do. i started by measuring everything and next thing you know everything was just getting eyeballed. so its not going to be the prettiest build but at least it will be different. now onto the pics. its far from done but this is what i have done so far http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0283.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0284.jpg the wheelbase of the stock MRC is a little short. it will be a little over 9" when comlete http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0285.jpg the width of the axles is perfect for such a small rig http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0286.jpg |
looking good so far!!!!!"thumbsup" i'm watching |
Looks like a great start. "thumbsup" |
not a big update but did a little work tonight. the rear fender wells looked a little funny so i decided to lower them a bit. also got the trans tunnel in and some bracing on the front fenders for the tops of the fenders to mate too. anyways here's a few pics. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0287.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0288.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0289.jpg |
front fenders and hood on. fenders need a little trimming and the hood needs a little filling but its on, it wasn't fun getting the shape of the hood either. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0297.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0301.jpg |
it's really coming along pretty nice."thumbsup" |
thanks. i wish i had more patience but pleased with it so far. |

multiple hours later i have this. PS: its not glued in yet so don't mind the little gap in between it and the hood http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0302.jpg |
Lookin like a CJ should! Anyone doing styrene work has more patience than I do! LOL it's coming along great, nice grille. |
small update. grill glued in. dash panel started. started on some of the rear body work. need some opinions if i should have it with or without a tailgate? well i guess i'll post a couple pics of its current look and the 1:24 scale static model i'm building it after. i built this model maybe 7 years ago now. i hope the finished product looks half as good as the model does. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0305.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0306.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0308.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0314.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0315.jpg |
That thing looks awesome. I am trying to do a TJ build with my SCX10 but am having trouble finding a body. Might have to go with someting like this but it won't turn out nearly as good. Great job."thumbsup" |
That is a cool CJ5! Lovin the exhaust,nice job."thumbsup" |

before you go diving into a headache like i did. check out the body in this link. maybe you'll like it and you might be able to find one for sale on here or on e-bay. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/1-9-scale-rigs/165170-street-trail-tj.html |
Not bad at all. Sometimes the eyeball is more accurate than measuring everything. Unless you're putting a cage in, I'd leave the tailgate on. It will help stiffen the body. |
i thought about leaving the tailgate for strengthening purposes. but it is gonna get a cage so the cage should tie everything together pretty well. still not sure. i'll probably keep it though |
doin a little filling. just waiting for it to dry before i start sanding. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0322.jpg also ordered a few goodies from RPP. cant wait till they get here. |
let me know what you guys think so far. still needs a few spot fillings but im thinking i'm almost ready to move onto building the frame. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0330.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0331.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...2/100_0332.jpg |
