Ford Farm Truck

I have admired my Son's RC scalers for some time. Several months ago, on one of our many trips to the hobby shop, I purchased a body on impulse. I didn't have a vision or a plan, I just liked the body. I recently had the opportunity to be a spectator at VARCOR's (Virginia RC Off Road) competition in Fredericksburg, VA. It was 20 degrees along the river, the high for the day, but it turned out to be an inspiring event for me. I decided to jump into the fray and build one for myself.

This is my first RC build so there will be some experimentation as well as trial and error. The body is a 1970 Ford F-100 from ProLine. Although not a completely accurate scale representation, I think it looks good for a lexan shell and it will allow me some flexibility with with my accuracy as well. I want to create a "weathered" truck so I am going to paint the outside of the shell. I have heard horror stories about keeping paint stuck to Lexan so I decide to try Krylon's Fusion Paint for Plastics. Others report good results and it is supposed to flex as the shell bends. I find a couple of complementary colors suitable for a vague depiction of a factory two-tone paint job.

And so, the build begins . . .

Looks great. I plan on doing something like that in the not to far future. I'm gonna paint the inside rust colour so when the outside paint scratches off it will show through.

I chose an AX10 kit as a base for the chassis. It seemed like a no-brainer for a noob like me. I went with the X-Trail frame and a bunch of TCS parts: Delrin skidplate, 4-link boomerang, 4-link servo mount, straight axle, and bent links.

I bought the X-Trail chassis right after it came out of development and started acquiring the other bits along the way. Then Axial introduced the SCX and TCS dropped the price of the X-Trail. Argh. I'm very glad I went with the AX10 kit for my first build in the end.

Thanks for the encouragement. I am working on a paint scheme for the Betty body that came with the AX10 kit. It will have a rusty color coat on the underside and lots of scratches on the outside. It looks very cool on the bodies that I have seen. Mnstr's C10 Chevy and Nlluvwithxlr8ing's blue Blazer immediately come to mind. I especially like Mnstr's multi-layer technique.

eddievedder 03-18-2009 02:43 PM

Okay. Here's a mock-up with some Hummer wheels I borrowed from Blazerbogger. They look so good that I now have some Hummer wheels in the mail. I will soon have a set of Flat Irons to mount as well.
