| engineerjoe's X-Trail YJ
I started this project a couple weeks ago and heve been tinkering with it. I finally have some time set aside the rest of this week to make some progress on it. X-Trail chassis I got from Nabil (ehills4x4) cut down to fit under the yj body. the idea I had for the shackles came from looking at the leaf spring setup of a early '90's F150. Basically they had the schackle offset to allow more swing from a smaller link (normally the shackle swing is limited by hitting the frame) Here it is with the body sitting on it. I want to leave the fenders stock but I am going to cut the running boards off. I'll be using: 110mm RC4WD dual spring shocks (obviously without the external springs) Airtronics 94162Z steering servo (frame mounted) Hobbico TS-80 1/4 scale servo for a winch (343 oz in) Sidewinder ESC 4s A123 55T motor with a 20T pinion Make my own LED lights, headlights, brake lights and rock lights Tonight I'll be mounting the steering servo, make cross braces and possibly hang the shocks (if they're in my mailbox). Thanks for all the comments. Got the shocks today from Tom Barger(Cruzin Illusion) and bolted them up. The fronts fit right in and I had to make some small brackets for the rear shocks. I'm pleased with the placement and hopefully they will wear a little and get smoother (they stick a little right now) I also got the steering servo and linkage in place. Then I had to put the window in to see what it looks like: this thing is turning out better than I'd hoped. Tomorrow will be mounting the body and making a spot for batteries/electronics. Paint theme is going to be white Sahara edition with a tan top and black bumpers Last edited by engineerjoe; 08-26-2009 at 08:33 PM. |

How strong are the shackles with only one on each side. Shouldn't the leaf be sandwiched between two for more strength.

Nice start to your build. Could you make your frame a little wider, so the frame horns were centered over the leafs? That way you could sandwich the spring between a set of shackles on one end and a spring perch on the other. Just asking as my next build is going to be a leaf set-up.

Yep, it's definitely possible to move the frame rails out or even move the leafs in a little bit (this will actually help your flex too) I built it this way for a couple reasons: 1. I wanted this rig to stay pretty low and be able to stuff a tire under flex 2. the delrin I had for making skids was only 3" wide 3. I had been thinking of using this shackle design for a while | |

Looking good! I like the white Sahara look, I think a dark turquoise with a black top would also look good. You see, I saw this YJ today (sitting in my garage) and thought " that color combo would look damn good on Joe's Tamiya body. Just kidding keep up the good work. I call dibbs if now if you decide to sell it.

it looks good! your x-trial chassis looks much more function than the trail-finder chassis. |
