Default 1978 GMC Longbed, SCX10 based, Farm Truck

BUILD SPECIFICATIONS
Body: Proline 80 Chevy Long Bed
Chassis: Stock Axial SCX10
Trans: Stock Axial SCX10
Axles: Stock Axial SCX10
Shocks: Losi Mini-T
Motor: Stock Axial AX10 27t
Speed Control: Traxxas Slash XL5
Receiver: Spektrum
Links: Custom Aluminum, stretched to match wheelbase of body
Servo: Hitec HS5625MG

So, here is where I will call home for a while. I will give you a little bit of background on where this project originated.

A couple short years ago I got my first crawler...an Axial AX10 RTR...and the bug bit me hard. As soon as the Proline 80's Chevy body came out, I ditched the stock body and started taking an interest in more of the custom scalers.

Since then, my father and I have picked up a used SCX10 to go down that Scaler road. We're not doing anything too extreme for the most part, this is our first Scaler after all. Eventually I'd like to put together another truck with leaf suspension maybe, but for now we're having a blast getting this truck put together.

More soon...

So I originally started out by picturing a tribute to an old truck that my dad used to have, a '79 GMC Heavy Half. So that's why the first couple pics you see have the brown truck. The thing is, that truck was just a 2WD truck, a two-tone brown and tan turd.

I started thinking more along the lines of creating a farm truck (generally speaking) that maybe more people could relate to. So that's when we decided to ditch the original short bed body and go with the long bed setup, machine our own links, and drop to a more "realistic" looking 1.55" size tire/wheel combo.

We have some RC4WD Mud Thrashers and White Wagon wheels on the way...as well as some styrene to fab up a more realistic bed. Someplace we can toss the hay bales and chains

I love the farm trucks. Will there be any rust? The 1.55 Thrashers will be awesome!

I'm going to have to sign up for a star...this remote hosting crap sucks.

I just got the new tires and wheels mounted...and took some static photos perched on the rocks. Looking even better all the time!

I'll try to get some fresh pics asap.

In the meantime, these new photos ARE loaded on my flickr page above...

I know, I know, I shouldn't even be talking here without the pictures posted but I just wanted to let you guys know that I have gotten a little farther with the deep bed styrene. This has been fun, but I'm glad I'm almost done.

The wheelwells and sides of the bed are .030", and the floor is .100".

Hoping to get a star very soon and getting the pics directly posted.

Here is the latest progress pic of the truck as of May 11.

We have front and rear aluminum bumpers machined up, and now working on mounts for them.

Now that I know how to upload pics directly here...I will be adding more...more often.

I still want to get a star though.

By all means, you should.
Nice chevy and work on the bed. You going to install some ribbing? I've used strips of 010 styrene for ribs in the past.

you can also do them on the underside for a little bit of extra scaleness.

Can't wait to see what you do for the grill. I really like the way the late 70's chevys look!! Nice work so far.

I originally thought about doing the ribbing, but after the way this bed turned out, I see that I am not really that close to scale after all. The next attempt will probably see something closer to scale, and will include ribbing. I think we're just going to shoot it with some texture to simulate the spray on bedliner look.

We should have the grill machined inside of the next two weeks. I modeled it in Solidworks and will be machining it from aluminum. We're going with a stock look, as opposed to the billet look.

We cut out the mounts via wire EDM...

The bumpers are solid 6061...

We decided to go with a smaller shock...and started out with some stock Losi Mini-T shocks that were in the parts bin...

Then I found some nicer oil-filled shocks from the old Mini-T Pro...
