| 1.55 Bronco, swb chassis, SSD D60 axles
I'm getting ready to start a 1.5 Bronco build using the new SSD D60 axle housings and an STRC swb chassis. All the parts to assemble the roller have arrived so I'll be posting pics later this afternoon. I've always wanted to build a Bronco but for whatever reason I never got around to it. No time like the present so here it goes.... Last edited by Killa-Cotton; 08-04-2017 at 04:35 AM. |

Laid out everthing I've got so far. Still missing the trans but I should have it tomorrow or Saturday. I had already built the axles a few days so today I started with the 90mm King shocks by disassembling them and rebuilding with AE Green Slime and 40wt oil. JMO but I'll never build another set of shocks without using slime on the o-rings. It gets rid of the initial "stick" of the shafts and keeps them from leaking too. Get some, It's good stuff. I already had a bunch of STRC alum parts on hand so this one is starting as a budget build. I hope to keep it that way. Here is a list the parts I've used so far below. More to come soon! Chassis: STRC swb rails, alum shock mounts, braces and links. SCX trans, bumper and body mounts. Axles: SSD D60 cases with LU TI rear axle shafts, FL spools w/ stock Axial ring gears, Axial CVD's with Gunnar pins, STRC alum chubs, knuckles and lock-outs, Fast Eddie bearings Driveshafts: Axial WB Shocks: Rc4wd 90mm Kings Wheels: 1.55 Steelies w/ Rock Stompers |

Very nice setup so far! Is that your final link setup? Looks like some Positive caster could be added (rotate knuckles back). |

Still working on the links but it does need more caster. Problem is my chubs don't rotate back and that's as low as I can go with the pinion angle without binding issues. My choices are axial hd chubs, a lower CG skid or better drive shafts than the WB's. I think the hd chubs allow for a good bit of caster.

Ok, just ordered a set of Axial HD chubs and a pair of short MIP's. These should fix the issues with the caster and assure the drive shafts will operate smoothly. You can never go wrong with MIP's anyway. While I'm waiting for the parts I'm going to start on the body. Pics up soon!

The Axial HD chubs arrived today and I'm happy to report that those combined with 3mm shorter upper links have removed almost all the negative castor. The short MIP's will be here tomorrow and those should take care of any binding issues. Damn swb builds are tough on pinion angles. As for the rest of the chassis, I ordered a VP frame mount CMS and Hitec HS-5685WM servo. This being a small scaler I don't really need massive amounts of steering torque. The great thing about the hs-5685 is it's only $40 and is high voltage capable. It's rated at 179oz @ 7.4v which will be plenty for this little Bronco. More pics up later tonight!

Update. Got the MIP's installed last night and as expected they spin like a dream. At first I still had something binding but quickly figured out the MIP's grub screw was rubbing the plastic transmission cover. A little trim with the dremel and everything turns smooth now. The 3-link and servo are a different story however. With this truck being a swb there isn't much room up front for a cms. The VP mount fits great but the arm of servo horn is going to hit the steering link before the suspension is at full compression. It will be even worse once the drag link is installed. However this is using a standard axial strait steering link. The clearance for the panhard is fine and I really would rather try and keep the 3-link set-up versus an axle mounted servo so I went ahead and ordered a SSD titanium steering link set. I'm hoping the bent link will clear the servo arm. If not I'll have to try a shorter servo horn or axle mount the servo. "Fingers crossed". I'll get some pics showing these issues today.

Pics as promised. I think I might be able to keep the 3-link set up. The SSD steering link gives the servo horn just enough room to clear on full suspension compression however I'll need a longer horn or drag link because there isn't quite enough swing to completely turn the wheels lock to lock. I was surprised to see how tight the turning radius is given that I only have Axial alum chubs, knuckles and CVD's so that's a plus. As far as the SSD parts, I must say quality of their stuff is excellent and I hope they continue to develop new products. I do wish the links were available in black though. Don't get me wrong, the grey anodizing is great looking but I'd rather the links on my trucks be less noticeable. Anyway on to the pics... Last edited by Killa-Cotton; 09-19-2015 at 09:11 AM. |

There's a donut in your Bronco body. It's shaping up pretty good! I like the looks of the Stompers! |

Looks great man. Can't wait to see what color you go with on the body and what tires you end up running
