RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread I couldn't resist ordering the new Blazer hard body from RC4WD. Here's a catch-up of my build so far https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/cb1.jpg Charlie |
Re: RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread I made some mods to the suspension set up to better match the blazer. I used the rear shocks from my Sand Scorcher on the front, angled them back and attached to the chassis rails. Having previously modified my Cruiser from 4 link to leaf springs I had some brackets that attached to the top of the front axle allowing me to lower the point at which the shocks attached. The rear shocks angle back on one side and forward on the other. Anyway some pictures of how it currently looks. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...p1000643-4.jpg https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...p1000647-4.jpg https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...p1000650-4.jpg Cheers, Charlie |

Re: RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread |
Re: RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread I've chosen the paint I'm going to use. For the white detailing I have some Ford Diamond White and for the rest I'm going to use an Aztec Bronze. Somewhat fortuitously we've had a mild spell of weather and I've been able to prime the body and apply the white. I also took some shots of it sitting alongside some of my other rigs for size comparison. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...1/p1000861.jpg https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...1/p1000865.jpg https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...1/p1000866.jpg https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...1/p1000868.jpg I've started work on the grill:- https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...1/p1000870.jpg I used Citadel Nuln Oil wash and applied it generously into the recesses to create a pool and then left it to dry. I still need to do the light bezels and a black line around the grill. As far as I can tell this design of grill is most often seen on '73 models. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/73.jpg |
Re: RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread |
Re: RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread I've made a fair bit of progress. I've managed to reasonably successfully get the body painted. Made a bit of a cock up initially and did the white stripe to wide so had to go back, re-mask and narrow it down a bit. I've started doing some detailing such as window rubbers an adding the lights, door handles, wipers etc. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000916.jpg https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000919.jpg I masked out a square on the rear lights for what I presume are the reversing lights but I don't like the way you can see the holes behind so I think I'll try to clear coat on the reverse to make the lenses less seethrough. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000903.jpg I also drilled out holes in the dashboard where the dials go, stuck the dials to some lexan and glues them in place with the intention of putting some LEDs behind them. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000913.jpg Plenty still to do but like the way it's heading. Re: RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread Masked up and did some chrome paint to simulate the chrome trim you see on some Blazers. Would have been nice to have some relief on it but probably should have added it before I started spraying. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000922.jpg I used Tamiya Chrome Silver. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000925.jpg Then I used some Shoe Goo to stick on the side badges:- https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000939.jpg I also added the tailgate. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000935.jpg I've mostly finished the interior, although it's not attached here, hence a bit wonky. This thing needs some door trims! https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000932.jpg Cheers, Charlie |
Re: RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread |
Re: RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread I did some fiddling about the with interior today. The dashboard is supposed to attach to the other interior part which consists of the floor and seats. However when you attach it this way it's extremely low, with little leg room for a driver and the steering wheel almost touching the seat. It also sits a fair way down from the bottom of the windscreen. I've no idea why they designed it like this but it looks daft to me so I drilled some new holes in the firewall and attached it higher so the top was flush with the bottom of the windscreen. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000951.jpg https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000953.jpg https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000956.jpg I also had a go at fitting Arnie in, it was a bit tight with his head rubbing on the roof and his legs just about squeezing in without the need for any butchery. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000960.jpg With the dashboard higher the steering wheel will sit much more naturally. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000963.jpg Anyway Arnie seems happy. I decided to keep the tailgate white and not add the vinyl brushed chrome effect. I like the rear as it is so added the rear badge. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1000966.jpg I don't like the supplied rear window, it's nice that it opens but it looks odd and all of the Blazers I've seen have windows tha retract into the tailgate. I may just use a sheet of lexan or similar. Charlie |

Re: RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread Wow that last picture looks so real! |
Re: RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread I scrolled to the bottom and thought the last picture was the 1:1 inspiration. It took me a minute to notice the tires said Mud Thrasher. Well done sir. "thumbsup" |

Re: RC4WD Blazer Catch Up Build Thread I'm not too keen on the included rear window. It sits externally and hinges up. On all the Blazers I've seen the window sits within the bed top and retracts in to the tailgate. I used some thin rubber sheet and stuck it all the way around the opening to simulate the window rubbers and then cut out a piece of lexan sheet and glued it in to place. To me it looks much more realistic. https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1010024.jpg https://aliennerd.files.wordpress.co...2/p1010028.jpg Charlie |
