Default A total n00b builds a CMAX Suburban

New year, new horribly mutilated body... or two.

Big fan of the square body Suburbans. As soon as RC4WD came out with the Blazer body I have been thinking about building one. But I didn't know what chassis to use for such a long wheelbase build. Enter the GCM CMAX. Infinity adjustable and accommodating of all types of suspension. Onward!

I spent the better part of today hacking two Blazer bodies to bits and trying to reassemble them in the shape of a Suburban.

In total I used a complete Blazer with a top, a cab and a second top.

A little reconfiguring

Not much waste in the end. I used the scraps to scab the insides together.

Behold! CMAX!

Waiting on axles before completing. Going leaf springs front and rear of course.

Comparison with my K10. Such length.

This will be another epic n00b build. That CMAX chassis is an awesome platform!

Sure, I'll go with epic but don't hold me to it!

Yes, yes I do
RC4WD Blazer and Friends

I cut up the remaining scraps from the body and melted them with MEK. I then smeared it on in the cracks and low spots.

Then I let it cure for a day or two then sanded

You may also notice removed all the trim from the windows, ground off the drip rails, filled in the door seams and also enlarged the windows make the frames narrower. That was the only problem with the Blazer body. The doors and drip rails had a weird downward slope to the rear. Not right. And when you add a second set of doors to the cab it really makes it stick out.

Check them lines

Fixed

Methyl Ethyl Ketone substitute. It's a type of thinner. It can also be used as a styrene/ABS solvent.

I start every day with some plastic jam on toast.

We always had one of these when I was a kid, they hold a special place in my heart. Those damn things were tanks and would do just about anything.

Funny you should say that. Our 1985 solid axle suburban had a jasper 350 and jasper trans along with a sticker that reads simply "TANK" on the back tailgate corner. Needless to say, we literally referred to the truck as TANK. Cool build Noob

Methyl Ethyl Ketone molecular structure. I used to love this stuff in college.
The chemistry part, not the chemical in particular.

So did we. Back when a middle class family could afford a brand new Suburban...

Haha

I cut a piece of styrene and clamped all my clamps to the roof. Actually I have about another 20 clamps. As the old saying goes "A man with many spring clamps has many spring clamps." Nailed it. Or should I say clamped it?

Next up is modifying the tailgate to be a proper Suburban tailgate.

Cool build! Lots of fun it looks like. Enjoyed both builds. I also have a blazer body so I like seeing what everyone else does to theirs. Great inspiration!

It's only a rumor

I ended up buying some Boom Racing V2 Scale Phat Axles and I'm going to run them upside down to keep the bumpkin on the right side.

I want this to be taller than stock CMAX would allow so I used longer shackles and lift blocks. Notice the GCM Blazer body mount up front from their shapeways store.

As long as the chassis is I'll still need to cut it and stretch it for this monster wheelbase.

Can the Chubs be flipped on those axles so the KPI is proper?

Unfortunately, no. It looks a bit weird but a diff on the wrong side would bother me more than upside down knuckles. At least in terms of appearance.
