| The Hilux Trail Rig becomes a Chase Truck Hi everybody! I want to introduce my slow 1.55 Hilux project. I just recognised that that I did not post it on here earlier (don't know why) but now I want to catch up on everything. The story so far...... chassis is a genuine Tamiya Bruiser with all screws turned inside out. So no srewheads are visible outside. I then heat treated the chassis with a gas torch to hot red. After cooling down, I put it into water and let it dry. This gave it the weathered look with all the real rust. The chassis itself is very weak and twist easely when articulating. Therefore I welded some cross members (round and square material) to give the chassis more stiffness. In the first stage, I hade original vintage Bruiser axles with Rummy conversion on, but I changed to RC4WD Yota axles soon. 1.55 Rock Stompers with Void beadlocks where my first wheel/tire choice. I changed later to Rock Stompers with black steelies. This is my current wheel/tire combo. Currently I have a RC4WD Disruptor reduction unit and a Killer TC installed. I started to use JunFac Universal shafts, but also changed these soon by much more scale looking Shafts from the bay. First front bumper was from an Axial Honcho, but I did not really like it. The current bumper is from CZ made by RCmodelex and all steel. The bumper is welded to the chassis to increase more stiffness to the front. Also the Roofrack and the Hardtop is from RCmodelex. The suspension consist of turned down TLT shocks and a combination of Bruiser and Juggernaut leafs. I opened them and interchanged leafs for best result. They are now higher than stock Bruiser leafs, but weaker than Juggernaut leafs. Last modifications are a fuel tank, rear steel bumper and rock sliders. The fuel tank is located behind the rear axle which is not absolutely correct but, I do not have space where it should be located because there is the modified Bruiser radio compartment. It will carry special configured 6cell battery. This ensures a low center of gravity because the heavy battery is in the frame and not on the frame. The rear bumper is made of cut and drilled rectangular steel. Directly welded to the frame. That also add some stiffness to the frame. I was inspired by a real car reference picture I found on the internet. Super sturdy and protects the rear end of the bed. The rock sliders are made of round and square steel and are directly welded to the frame. They are super solid and airy enough to look scale. Now I am working to close the nasty mounting holes in the hood and on the side doors. Soon there will be two main gear options arrive which I will test. Current setup I don’t like. The angle of the Universal shaft from the Disruptor to the Killer TC does not seem right because there is no smooth driving possible. So there will be an update soon. I am sure I forgot the one or the other thing to mention, but in general this is my super slow Hilux build thread J Comments welcome. Thomas Last edited by ThomasR; 01-10-2018 at 02:11 PM. |

Exactly this is what I like (beside the look and quality of course) on the rcmodelex stuff. The weight. The more the truck weight, the more realistic it runs. Especially when running a truck with leaf spring setup.

Nice work, usually not a fan of OD green, but it looks perfect for this build. The stance is spot on as well! |

| Re: The Hilux Trail Rig Did not have the chance to run the truck often. So actually I cant really say much about the tranny. When I have the new transmission I will be able to do more tests.

Today and the last few days I got one or the other piece for the Hilux. First two tires to make a set of 4. My previous tires/wheels got my son on his SCX10 Hilux while my Hilux got the old rusty steelies. The steelies were chemical stripped and sand blasted and the weathering process took about one year running in dirt and mud. On front wheels working two scale locking hubs from RC4WD as wheel nut. The bullbar got a whinch and a new 3-speed transmission will find its place in the frame. I just have to shorten the output shafts on the tranny and TC and it will fit nicely. Now I have to make a mount for the transmission. Can't wait to make first test run. |

That's funny. I started my hilux about two years ago (very slow progress - I know) not knowing about that one. |
