Default Oh hey another shitty samurai....truggy on Toyota axles

So I’ve been back in this hobby about 2 months after a very long hiatus, back in the days when lipos and axial didn’t exist yet. In a matter of 2 weeks I picked up 2 used rigs to get my feet wet, (venture and a bomber) well now that the venture is exoed’ and throughly tuned to perform, basically done until I decide to hard body. And my bomber is going ar44/1.9 I wanted to slap something together based on a 1:1 build and then I found this Sammy and decided to base a build on it, albeit loosely seeing this is the only photo I can find of it.

So I picked up a set rc4wd yota2 axles, r3 single speed, and hammers tcase, some 1.55 wagon wheels and 4” rock stompers(tsls) I hand bent a frame (but didn’t end up liking the way it turned out) next was to build some leaf springs, of the military wrap flavor
Then finally the body showed, guys first try at abs, it’s so so, but good enough for me(especially the price) but he forgot to mirror and print the other rocker so I was stuck for a few days and decided to go to an scx frame for the front sweep that’s more of what a Sammy really has, weight and overall ease, here’s the lay out I’m going to go with . The tcase is flipped so I can have correct drive shaft drop for Toyota axles,I never understood why rc4wd tf2 comes how it does with offset shafts. Currently a friend is printing a bench seat to enclose and hide that battery, didn’t have any better ideas on how
To have a full interior with so little body, and package it all. This brings us too today, I got home from wheeling with my buddies at about 4 and put in 4 hours of work. Here’s what I got done. this is with windshield, door and hood just sitting on it too see how it’ll look. And here’s the tube work I got done.
So that’s where it’s at, I’ll be trying to get this done with relative quickness so hopefully it’ll be done before axial fest, but the bomber HAS to be done by then so it’s only getting half of my time until that’s done. Will be updating quasi regularly.

Not to much done today but got rear geometry figured, made side mounting plates welded rear cage section to plates and welded in upper mounts so I could cut the frame into the truggy look I’m after. Some more poser shots with body parts

Waiting on the universal joints to show up so I can lock down tcase location, so that’s holding up the cage progress but styrene showed up today so I decided to mount a door, and do
Some styrene fillers Now I need better options for hood hinges, any suggestions?

Got some more work done the last two nights here’s where it’s at now. need to make some tie in plates to get that front locked down to the frame, for the tcase I just did a flat mount and welded it to the tie in plates at rear of frame ends
This angles a little hard, but it spins bind free and cog free, I know it’s going to accelerate the wear of the bearings but it’s a trade off for seatand battery position, not a lot of options on a build with a very open cab like this and keeping a full interior.

also drilled some holes through the rear down tubes to mount the body at the rear. overall very happy with how this is coming together. Just a couple more nights of tube work and I can focus on finishing the body while the frame goes to powder coating

Finished the passenger compartment tube work which means I can move on to the front work. Which brought me to the hardest part of this build so far, cutting the body. I think a part of my soul died cutting it up, but had to happen for tire clearance and tube work

Thanks man. I’ll be back onto this tomorrow or Wednesday and finish all the tube work. I ruined my two other rigs on the rocks yesterday(one caught fire mildly and one took a 8ft freefall onto the cage and is ****ed)and need to get atleast one fixed before I go full blast on this again.

Ouch! This is why I kinda hover around mine incase it rolls so it only goes a couple of feet. Pretty sure mine would crumple like the real deal if I hard rolled it

This build won’t be subjected to the abuse my exoed lexan 4Runner was, but now that ones getting an lc70 hardbody so the only one getting sent into dumb stuff is my 1.9 bomber I just finished

Nice progress! Is there anyway to lower the motor mount and drop the driveline angle?

Nice work

I got to say, I looked for a long time before finding short (real short) driveshafts. My biggest issue was a drive pin and not a grub screw.

Isn’t building fun

Not really. Current placement is that high to have front driveshaft clearance, and it’s pretty much the only way I can personally get it to work, I think with some fast eddy bearings I won’t blow through them to quickly

Yea. I found some from axial meant for wild boar driveshafts that will work

So this thing sat for awhile while I got my other trucks running, and worked some crazy hours, finally got some time off and finished up the cage on this that’s where it’s at so far, now I’m going to finish up the trans mount and get on the servo mount
