1970 Ford F100 Many moons ago, I found a killer deal on a NIP Pro-Line body that I just had to buy. I kept it waiting for a proper rig, in the package. Recently, I bought a used SCX10.2 off a buddy of mine and thought it to be a decent match This will be a pretty mild build; bumpers and sliders and maybe a winch. I've been collecting parts over the winter, and I think I'm finally ready to begin the building process. I'm still waiting on a few more things, hopefully they'll be in tomorrow. In the mean time, my desk is full of parts from the teardown and I have a few pictures to share http://i.imgur.com/wjP8LQ7h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/DHguEdnh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Rl1WANFh.jpg |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 Bumpside ftw. I own a '72 F-250, let me know if you have any detail questions lol. |

USPS apparently hates me. My order from RPP was supposed to be delivered yesterday. Tracking showed it hit my local post office, then went about 10 miles north of me, then an hour south of me, then 30 miles north again, then it hit my local post office again and said it was out for delivery at 7am this morning. Post man came and went today, so maybe Monday There's a motor in that order, but in the mean time, I cleaned up and re-greased the transmission. Went ahead and installed it. http://i.imgur.com/qZfCzGEh.jpg I'm a bit of a cyclist/bike mechanic, so I used what grease I had around. Park Tools PPL-1 http://i.imgur.com/ES1plz6h.jpg Checked tracking again and now it says its available for pickup at my local post office. They're closed tomorrow. I worked all week and waited on this to be delivered so I could make some progress over the weekend... So I'll get parts when I have to work, GREAT. |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 I have a tube of the PPL grease, too. Does it work well for RCs? |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 Quote:
It's probably not the best but I'm no expert... I read enough to give it a try! Plus I had it handy... |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 I checked tracking every chance I could Monday at work, fully expecting to pick up my package at the post office. Thankfully, the powers that be made me check tracking again right before I clocked out and it said my package had been delivered:shock: Thanks for jerking me around USPS, I'd like to not do that again if that's ok... I promptly set to work installing parts and cleaning up what I had, here's results http://i.imgur.com/EnbVvmWh.jpg I firstly swapped out the springs in favor of the SCX10 III springs, mostly cause I like the color more. I didn't notice much slop going from the 12.5mm springs that were on these shocks originally, but these springs have a 13mm diameter http://i.imgur.com/yP2RJifh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/06K5aexh.jpg I also installed a Holmes Hobbies 16t motor. Going to a 5 slot motor should be a treat, and I like it's overall looks. I trimmed the stock battery tray significantly, for future installation of electronics, and you probably spy a new servo. http://i.imgur.com/IZgiEWah.jpg Steering will be handled by a HiTec 5645MG and a cheap clamping horn http://i.imgur.com/q4V2gjAh.jpg I also rebuilt and regreased these axles, and installed black diff covers. The tires are 1.55 RC4WD Rock Stompers, and I'll be running RC4WD stamped steel wheels. I just placed another order to RPP, with things to hang these axles and hopefully be ready for wiring. The weather is almost nice enough to get outside and paint my body too Updates as they happen! I know my camera (cell phone) takes horrible pics. Not only am I looking at getting a proper dslr, but I want to build or possibly buy a few backdrop items and lighting tools as well. That should improve things! At least when I post my crap on the internet"thumbsup" |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 Watching this one closely. Pardon my newbness, what does "five slot" mean regarding a motor? |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 Quote:
Explained here: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/elect...ml#post5853124 Check out this motor chart to get a better idea of motor turn equivalencies between 3-slot and 5-slot: https://holmeshobbies.com/motor-recommendations |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 I'm fairly new to 5 slot motors myself, just wanna see what the craze is all about"thumbsup" Back in the day, we ran whatever motor worked and were just happy to see our rig move. But I know there's gotta be something better. I guess I got "convinced" |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 Quote:
thanks for the link! Its time for me to do some learning!! lol The whole 3 slot/5 slot-turn/KV mess is confusing as hell to me! but Im slowly getting better versed in them |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 I used to own an F100 body. It was probably too nice for me and it eventually got sold. I've regretted that moment ever since, and am doing my best to honor it with this build http://i.imgur.com/wOJwdyJh.jpg Except with the paint... For paint, I'm thinking something more along the lines of this: http://i.imgur.com/oar3DJnh.jpg pic stolen from the internet, beautiful truck! Anyone know of some 1:10 mirrors that would look that part? |

Re: 1970 Ford F100 Quote:
What is the actual height of those Rock Stompers? I know they claim 3.85", but I know that number is notorious for being wrong. I like the look of these, but don't want them to look too small especially with 1.9" wheels stretched on. |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 My tires measure a shade under 4". A guy could call em 4" diameter and not be very wrong |

Re: 1970 Ford F100 I'm just too anxious of a person to wait for the rest of my parts... so I decided to button up the electronics. Added a Spektrum SR315 Rx, a Dynamite 60 amp brushed ESC, and a Power Hobby 3000mAh (30c) 3s (11.1v) LiPo battery http://i.imgur.com/p5g8zIxh.jpg I also hacked up an original SCX10 receiver box, and mounted it to the front crossmember. I added spacers for the perfect amount of driveshaft clearance, though, once the axles are hung I might have to adjust some http://i.imgur.com/P0NTySqh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ytNOdXQh.jpg I might eventually replace this battery box. It's pretty beat up:lmao: |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 A guy got some parts in... time for an update The original AR44 instructions had only one bearing on the axle lockout in the rear, while the front has a bearing in the housing too http://i.imgur.com/0zfSLTyh.jpg After some tinkering with the rear axle, I found the bearings for the lockout would also fit the axle housing http://i.imgur.com/X7r1qJSh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/KR54zx5h.jpg I also have been lusting over the Atlas transfer case from Vanquish. Had to have one... http://i.imgur.com/kWTy3Oeh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ubmfQtUh.jpg Nestled in nicely, and looks terrific! http://i.imgur.com/MaShbPuh.jpg When I rebuilt the transmission a few days ago, I wasn't sure about the pinion/spur combo. The guy I bought the rig from was running some random 20-something tooth 48p pinion and it had to go. Back to stock it went http://i.imgur.com/bJhrDO2h.jpg I re-installed the spur cover and am putting a "done" stamp on this transmission (for now...) http://i.imgur.com/O3CMjykh.jpg |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 Installed front and rear aluminum shock towers from SSD http://i.imgur.com/22gHQSuh.jpg Hoping to have a rolling chassis tomorrow"thumbsup" |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 And boom! I have a driveable chassis. Still got lotsa fine tuning and some corrections to make, but while the weather doesn't suck for a moment I thought I'd make use of the natural light and snap a few outdoor pics. http://i.imgur.com/V2cm0IVh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/z5r3i3lh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/cCpuH9wh.jpg I'm not sure how I feel about this random-colored wiring, probably get after it with some black heat shrink... I also ordered a new camera, so my pictures should look better soon. Though, these outdoor shots make me believe that 98% of the "problem" with cell phone pics is the lighting |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 Can't wait to see how it turns out! |

Re: 1970 Ford F100 Wiring update! Hopefully start on the body soon, but I had to try out my new camera... http://i.imgur.com/zDxnzlGh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/GU3oEvmh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/vy4A8rZh.jpg Might be making the switch to deans plugs on all my rigs soon. Blue just doesn't seem to be working for me |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 Small update: I began the body work. I had to wait on some proper body scissors cause this body is THICK! Got it mostly trimmed out and sat on the chassis http://i.imgur.com/EeEjm2Ih.jpg I don't like the look... Axles are way too wide for me. The rig would look more correct with a larger tire, but I've wanted these tires for years and I'm determined to make them work! I have a remedy coming in the mail to hopefully get this track width under control and make me love this build all over again In some other good news, the weather is starting to get nice so I might be slingin paint soon |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 What’s the width on the body? _________________ 79 F150 SCX10 ii TRXWalker |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 The front fender wells measure 7 1/16" across. The rear is slightly wider |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 To hopefully remedy my narrow body/small tire situation, I bought some narrow beef tubes... and axle housings:twisted: http://i.imgur.com/Nh0dvRph.jpg Axle shafts should be in tomorrow, and I'm still waiting on a couple bits before paint Also get to figure out steering links and knuckles now |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 http://i.imgur.com/ZbmZlQph.jpg http://i.imgur.com/UDWGzguh.jpg Looks much better! http://i.imgur.com/GcHGQ4ah.jpg Installed the Narrow Axles with Beef Tubes. Also Snipped a set of Vanquish knuckles off one of my other rigs, and installed narrowed front universals and rear shafts from Beef Tubes. The steering links and panhard are from RC4x4. Also stole some Beef Tubes Beef Tips (shock spring retainers) from another rig, and got started on installing a servo winch. I got rid of the EC3 connectors in favor of some deans knockoffs that are black while the soldering iron was out http://i.imgur.com/cmF2tXdh.jpg My winch consists of a Hitec 645mg that's been gutted and wired with a HeyOK controller. The drum is an old sewing spool for now screwed to a round hitec arm. http://i.imgur.com/3e28nw8h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/gMy9MqOh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Gtdgr58h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/TVwaADqh.jpg I messed around with some SCX10iii wheel nut covers and tried to turn them down to fit, got frustrated at my lack of tools and placed an order... |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 I successfully destroyed the esc I planned to run. Plugged in a battery and it let the magic smoke out... all that was damaged was the ESC (and the air quality of my bedroom):ror: I must have done it in with the soldering iron Bought a replacement: http://i.imgur.com/kiegIVah.jpg Got that all wired correctly, works like a charm! It wouldn't fit in the SCX box, so I mounted it to an old Axial servo plate. I still have lots of work to do on the wiring, and I need to clean up a few things on the chassis. I replaced my winch drum with a proper unit from Locked Up RC. I added some scale hubs to give the wheels a finished look, also from LURC. I routed the winch line through an old RC4WD Viking fairlead I had, and changed the front bumper in favor of a brace. http://i.imgur.com/3uCopHph.jpg http://i.imgur.com/cA1ta8Qh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/NOAc3AQh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/V4G1l1Lh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/7C6NtCUh.jpg I've gotten farther with the body, but I'm intentionally going slow and constantly taking a break in hopes I get a great outcome. |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 great going... as for the bumper the vs-104 plastic bumper looks similar to the bumper inspiration you got there. its cheap and comes with a matching tube rear bumper. |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 It's funny you say that, I actually bought a set from a buddy of mine and intended to run the front. Much to my amazement the width is absolutely perfect! (The rear is too wide, but meh.) The only "problem" I ran into was personal preference. The bumper stuck out too far forward for my liking with the stock SCX10.2 bumper mount. I may try to fabricate a mount to shove the bumper back towards the front of the body a half inch or so8) |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 Got me a new mount for my winch servo! http://i.imgur.com/fNV86twh.jpg I got a vanquish mount for AR60 axles, and it fit the holes I already had drilled (to mount the scx10 mount) Old Mount: http://i.imgur.com/7GLq4Lmh.jpg New mount: http://i.imgur.com/02Vae1Dh.jpg All back together and working proper: http://i.imgur.com/dRsZck0h.jpg I still need to trim the screws I used... I bought a replacement gear set for this servo. Shoulda just bought an entire servo... gears alone were expensive! But at least I got good grease... http://i.imgur.com/VWIzz4Eh.jpg |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 Hey grob, did yo finish up this rig? As of your last post, it was looking pretty good man. 1.5 builds like this, have me wanting to dig into my Gen8 AXE and put smaller tires on it to try and make it looks more scale. With the portal axles, it will truly not be scale, but I am hoping to get it closer. The wide axles will also pose a problem, but I'll see what I can come up with. |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 I haven't touched this rig in a while. Been working on other RC projects, living life, and been dialing in my 1:1 I had a chance last weekend to run this rig, and found a few problems that I got to fix, and I'm glad to announce that I've finally began masking the body and prepping it for paint (sometime in the next few days) I added an old pair of random sliders I had in my parts box. They're from an old SCX10 rig that I bought for parts and never used until now. While they seem very well built, I hardly know anything about them:oops: I swapped the battery plugs on all my rigs to the more popular XT60 design. I'm a stickler for black, and these had little covers so I didn't have to use heatshrink"thumbsup" Though I had the body trimmed (to factory lines) after running it, I found it interfered with my winch setup so I trimmed more away. Mostly in the front, but I also trimmed the sides a bit to clear the sliders Speaking of the winch, I moved my rearmost guide over a bit so the line would spool back up correctly. I want to go back to the original plastic skidplate. This one works flawless, but the links are an extremely loose fit and I'm too lazy to shim them correctly http://i.imgur.com/HdSWMgBh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/j6WcZrfh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/3Vvi11ph.jpg http://i.imgur.com/x6pAa9yh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/gZPDWTZh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/LmWKwxuh.jpg I'll post an update once I get some color sprayed8) |
Re: 1970 Ford F100 Quote:
As a word of caution, I tried 1.55 wheels on a set of AR45P axles and they wouldn't clear... though portal axles seem wonderful |
