8x8 Trial Truck

I have wanted to build an 8x8 for some time now and i also needed a 1.9 entry for the scale nats in Montana so i busted out my last 2 TLT kits and started to build:D

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...erDuper046.jpg

After watching videos of these monsters in action I knew I wanted to build with a trials truck theme and this is what i have so far

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...erDuper045.jpg

With the flatbed off you can see the walking beam suspension thats under both front and rear

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...erDuper048.jpg

An AX-10 tranny serves as a Divorsed transfer case

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...erDuper049.jpg

The front bumper, or should i say plow:twisted: Every one of these trucks have a crazy front over hang and so does this one The only thing that will stop this truck is the front bumper but if so the winch will fix the problem
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...erDuper047.jpg

The front cagework and cab flip foreward to make it easy to work on electronics. And since it cant be a proper trial truck without gears it has a highlift 3 speed tranny mounted up side down so the motor sits between the front axles

Im still testing with battery placement and as soon as i make up my mind its teardown time and paint

holy:shock: that is awsome! i bet that will go any where, i love the large dia tube cage"thumbsup"

Sweet truck

I'm at about the same stage of a 6x6 build using the Bruder MAN cab. I'm even using the same wheels and tires. Can you post some pics of the suspension without the tires?? I'd love to see more detail.... Maybe some specs too...

chino63 04-12-2008 07:34 PM

Damn! That thing is sick! I wish I could go to the Scale Nat's. It would be sweet to have a few 6x6/8x8's tearing it up.

Unimoger 04-12-2008 09:10 PM

unreal, guess that week off of work paid off, nice job Jim!;-)

XSRCdesign 04-12-2008 09:28 PM

Thanks Chino, I built this so it could hang with youre 6x6;-) Youre build thread was a lot of help. Its a shame someone of youre scale greatness cant make it to Montana:-(

Time well spent Ben....time well spent..

I have been driveing this hoss around and have ran a few packs through it moveing batteries around and what i like best is over the rear axles between the frame rails. I will make a battery tray and have the flat bed hinge rearward so changeing packs is quick and easy

Thanks agin. I wanted to do something new. It flexes about as good as leaf springs but when you have 8 tires packing one or two just dont matter, If i was really cool i would have spent the cash in the mini air bags off garton trucking

dieselfuel 04-13-2008 02:45 AM

oh my god... its beautiful...

seriously nice work man, i love the suspension and tubework. ive been looking for one of those bruder mercedes cabs for a while now. after my current 2 scale projects, its 6x6 time.

we'll definetly need some video of this monster in action!

jimbiss 04-13-2008 04:33 AM

Awesome, video would be really cool

microgoat 04-13-2008 06:33 AM

The walking beam is perfect "thumbsup"

Glad my build helped. I don't know about scale greatness:oops:....
Yeah, wish I could make Montana.

Watch out you don't lose the e-clips on the Tamiya u-joints. I lost a couple. Ended up buzzing a small tack onto the end of the pin(e-clip still on) with the MIG, then ground it down a bit till it was like a nail head. Works great! I don't recommend it but it works for me. Be careful doing this because it will melt the ears off if you are not.

miniwheeler 04-14-2008 12:17 AM

10-4 on the e-clips , you notice only one highlift driveline:x Its kind of like the diff drain plug on toyota axles when runnin the rubicon trail, dam rock snaggs the hex and spins that sucker out:shock:

Worked on the 8x8 some more today.........

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...erDuper050.jpg

Used the highlift hinge for the dump bed and made the flatbed swing back

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...erDuper051.jpg

With the body out of the way you can see the electronics trays for the rx and esc

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...erDuper052.jpg

The battery tray for a 6cell subC stick pack

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...erDuper053.jpg

More pics of the front suspension you can see the mortor nested between
the steering servos

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...erDuper055.jpg

Rear suspension with the wheels off

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...erDuper054.jpg

Flex shot :shock:yep thats it

All thats left is a little more tube work for a cover behind the tranny to hide the ugly

chino63 04-14-2008 12:32 AM

Damn that thing is nice! Your work is impeccable. Since I built mine, I've been contemplating doing the 8x8 thing but not sure how it would look. Might have to turn my other King Hauler into one now.:lol:

P.S. I hear you on the diff plugs. Mine are so packed with dirt they might not come out now.

Looks clean. Are you going to use some sort of protection for the steering drag links? just seem like they'll be one of the firts things to get caught on a rock

dieselfuel 04-14-2008 12:42 AM

hey whats the wheelbase between axles 2 & 3? and the overall chassis length? this 8x8 has really got me thinking, i wanna try to base a chassis/suspension off the trucks i work on everyday.

The HL tranny is so dam big you cant hide it so I hade to make it look like something:lol: all i need now is a little turbo to go on the drivers side

5 1/4 between axles and 10 1/2 front to rear
