KOH Race/trail Jeep CJ

After a year of planning & collecting parts I've started my most indepth 1.9 scale build to date. I'm starting with the frame which is made from 3/8" x 3/8" cromoly box tubing. Originally I was going to piece the frame together by cutting, mitering and welding it up. But Chino63 gave me the idea to use one piece of tube and notch & bend it. So thats the plan. The frame with have built in bumpers/cross members and a bolt in round tube tranny cross member.

Here's the parts list, some things may change

Box tube frame (EDIT:SCX10 Frame)
Lathe motor mated to a GD600
divorced axial trans as a T-case,though an R2D may be installed backwards for 2wd. (EDIT: Axial)
TLT axles(EDIT: Axial)
Leafs front & rear(EDIT: 3 link, 4 link)
turned down TLT shocks(EDIT: Proline Powerstrokes)
1.9 wheels unsure on tires(EDIT: Flat Irons on Axial wheels and TSL's on Dark Soul wheels)
Proline CJ8 body(EDIT:Hood and grill only)
3/16 Cromoly tube cage, shock hoops, etc.

So far the biggest issue will be mounting the springs to give me the desired WB & ride height.

Here's a few starting pics

looks promising.

Looks good so far. Where did you get that frame material? I couldn't find any that was that small and hollow.

Well both frame rails are now bent up. I need to weld them up and figure out the leaf set up.

I buy the material at McMaster-Carr

Nice Dave, is this where the nib CJ body is going?

Yup it is. I'm debating on cutting up the body to make a cage. My only concern is the body structure will be lost. I was going to head down to the shop today but I have an MRI tonight and didn't want to risk getting metal in my eye. I already had to get Xray's of my eye. They say if you have any magnetic material in your eye it will move around during the MRI and tear up your eye. That would be bad. So I'm planning on wednsday. Wish I had a TIG though.

Hope everything is ok ;-)

If you do cut the top off, just make some tabs to bolt the body on with some little hardware.

Thats a good idea. I may have a hard time cutting it up since it's the last one I'll every have. I may cut up the orange one for practice.

Just ordered a Delrin Fairlead for the winch

I like your plans for the chassis. Looks great. Can't wait to see more.

This should be cool. Sounds like a good build list.

If you're going to cut the top off why not use a Rubi?

Well I few reason, First off the CJ came with leafs on 4 corners, which I am going to use, The Rubicon is too big for 1.9's in my opinion, and last I drive a CJ7. This rig is going to be a close replica of my 1:1 CJ.

Hey where is everyone getting the scale diamond plate? I need to make some corners & rockers out of it.

Here's a few more pics. The frame rails are complete. I need to make some mounting plates for the TLT link mounts that will be springs hangers. The mounting plates will lengthen the WB a bit and give me enough material to drill & tap the frame and allow the hangers to be removable.

The next is how the body will sit on the frame

I'll make sure it doesn't perform at all. that should help.

I'm kinda stuck on 1 part of the suspension. I'm trying to figure out how to mount the shackles to the frame. What have some of you done?

Brandon 05-14-2008 04:56 PM

Use another tlt mount. Should be perfect. Or go over to tacodabs and steal some of the highlift leaf spring mounts
