Well, my local club is going to hold a Top Truck Challange, and this build will be my entry for the 1.9 class. Now, let me go ahead and say I am building this to beat on, so form will have to take a back seat to function, at least to some extent. I always have liked the old GM's that have been in the TTC's in the past, so a little inspirational searching yeilded the following (all TTC contenders), and I have decided to take my favorite aspects from each one, rather than build a scale copy of one individual truck. Crazy thing is, I was planning on this exact paint job before I found this picture: I really like the nose pinch idea, like on this one: This one had the nose pinch, but the front axle is set forward, which I also plan on doing: And finally, this one I intend to take the most from, it has a simple flat bed, frame mounted winch, chopped fenders, and the set forward front axle, all of which really fits with the simple and effective theme I am going for: |

Now for the tech. Clod Cab K2-5 frame Axial axles Axial trans Erickson Delrin Beadlocks (best in the biz) Either cut down and narrowed Mashers, or Trail Dr. XL's HHH 35 turn Sidewinder ESC 3 cell 1500 lipo Hitec 5998tg Servo DX3R Now, for my first ever body work: I filled the blower hole, and pinched the nose by removing sections of the hood. I held a lighter flame to the inside of the body, at the rear part of the front fenders until they became soft, and held them into position while they cooled. I then used body filler to hold it all together, which after two runs on another truck is already falling apart (sorry, I didn't take any progress pics of this work): I plan to reinforce the nose area with better cut strips of styrene, and then go over it all with some body filler afterwards. I will also fill the two holes in the hood. After some work, I think I almost have the grill ready for paint, I cut out a section, glued it back together, removed the 4x4 from the center, sanded it smooth, and used a dremel to continue the grill lines: And last for now, I have started on the back cab filler panel. Cut from .60 styrene sheet: Check the fitment, not to bad for a first timer huh? Thats all I've got for now, but there will be more to come soon, stay tuned. nice work. try using the lighter to soften/melt styrene strips, really thin strips, to use instead of body filler to fill in gaps and then go over it with tenax or plastruct to bond the styrene together. you'll have a stronger bond.

Those are all some nice trucks. I have a soft spot for old GM trucks myself. The last one is good inspiration. It looks tough. How is this "Top Truck Challenge" gonna work? Similar to the full size one? It sounds interesting. Pablo that's a good tip on the styrene work, thanks |

nice choices of rigs, if you look at the top truck stats nearly all of them are running some sort of GM product. and now the first one you posted in is rocks with full hydro rear steer and only four inches of lift. with the front axle moved forward via the "B52" mod is an excellent way to get flex and stay out of the firewall. you want to have a flatter spring with a long shackle to get wicked droop and still good compression. you will need long travel shocks of you get it right. also i see youre using axial axles, IMO those will set you out WAAY to wide and will look just silly with the pinched nose. here you can see how im a pic whore and the pinched nose let me in this space here. |

Well, I finally made some more progress on the truck. I glued in the blank back cab wall, and then cut and glued a detailed cab wall out of .30 styrene. Its really strong. I also took Pantablo's advise and glued in a soft/melted piece of styrene in the gap on the hood line. (worked great, thanks again) As you can tell in the pic above, the hood became too long after the nose pinch, so I had to remake a new front end of the hood, to meet the grill. It looks okay and is strong as hell from reinforcement. I have also assembled and tested a rolling chassis. The truck without body can climb like crazy and has some pretty nice flex. Here are some pics. And here are a few with the cab mocked up at what will be very close to final ride height. I think I'm going to move the body forward maybe 1/2" and lower it 1/4 to 1/2". And the mandatory flex shot: |
