this is just nuts! I know scale model building guys that would KILL to be able to do this....

Incidentally, I tried it myself just trying to make a half-decent looking panel off the bedside of a blackfoot body...

Folks, I used the same thing he did (aluminum cooking tins) and guessing I used much the same technicques...

It is NOT as easy as he makes it look.... I was able to get a half-ass panel but it was all warped...

Buddy, I have no idea how you do it. The crazy compound curves on the fenderwells alone... just astounding....

Much props! You HAVE to get video of this thing in action.

Thanks Javelin, Most don't realize what's really going on when i make these panels. working the metal this way take great patience and practice. I've been doing it for almost 25 years now so i have some time under my belt. I'm also a perfectionist which drives me wife nuts

The compound curves are the worst to deal with but the inner fenders are nothing compared to the outer skins. the flair always gives me fits. was just making some more panels tonight and my hands hurt.

Well on that topic, here is some more progress.

I couldn't leave well enough alone and with the bed looking so good I just didn't see it right to use the original fenders i made that were a little raggid on the ends.

I never finalized the molds when I did the original panels so i took some time and cleaned them up. primarily around the tail light

Here is the new fender next to the old one

much better in my opinion, and now there is a decent place for the lights to rezide. Yes this will have functioning lights!

Then I made some fender extensions

These fill the gap between the fender skin and the rear of the bed

finally I added the rear of the bed.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have the sides on

Time for bed

I'm glad you can finally see the pics Walt. Don't worry you'll be able to see it in person soon enough.

Well I got more done on the bed

I installed the bed sides finally and now it's looking like something

Just an FYI for those interested, this is exactly how the real bed is constructed. the skins attach directly to the bed floor. There is no inner bed sides. and for those doing drop beds the floor attaches right in-line with the belt line on the side of the fenders.

Here is a detail of the filler panel on the back of the bed

And a few shots of the underside

Looks like a real bed standing there huh?

Next I made a new roll pan

and glued it in place

Then I made a new tail gate skin

and gave it a test fit

the last thing i addressed was the tail light buckets

I didn't make a mold for this one. I simply took some measurements and bent up some scrap.

once in place they look real good

I am also working on a way to replicate the original tail lights and i'm making some reflective backers that will bolt on through the holes in the bucket but that's for a later time. Oh and they will be designed to brake!

Here it is all finished sans the tail gate. I'll work on that later but right now i'm moving onto the cab!

Enjoy!
