Default Hilux Tranny / Transfer with Axial gears

I am getting ready to take my first stab at building a scaler. I decided to purchase the Tamiya Hilux. At first I was going to build it stock then start adding on. But then My brain gears starting working and I decided to build a scale tranny, or something close using axial gears the would fit exactly within the frame of the truck. I haven't even taken the parts out of the box yet and I am already changing stuff. Look for a build thread soon. Here is a my cad/cam drawing of what I have so far.

This first pic is the milling of the outer profile and the internal pocket. I am going to use a Aluminum block which will be real strong and hopefuly look fairly scale than Delrin. All the hole are for the bolts. I don't really need that many but once built I think it will look fairly nice.

The second picture is what the outside will look like. I added all the gussets trying to make it look real. Giving the tight space and gears it is nearly impossible to make a perfect gear case, but I hope this will get me close and look sharp. It should only hang down about 1/4-3/8 of an inche below the frame. I didn't want it above because on a real truck the tranny is below the frame of the truck. Trying to stay close to real while giving it some climbing clearance

Let's see if I can squeeze it in a mill at work tomorrow.
More to come!!

Stay tuned. If I am right this will also work in the F-350 and the Tundra.

For sure. I will starting a build thread this weekend from the box. I will be attaching this thread along with it. I want to build a nice capable truck. This is my first scaler., so all ideas and criticism will be helpful. Just don't get ugly.

Default Started the machining

I was able to get the parts on the machine during my lunch today. I was trying to hurry but not risk screwing one up since they are mirror images of each other, and i had no extra material.

This how they look after the first operation fresh out of the machine.

Here is a mock up with the gearrs in place, just to make sure everything fits so far

It is an idea but that thing is huge. I could makes mount to raise the tranny up in the chassis, but I think that would make it really top heavy. I was contemplating that, but I want a nice trail truck. My idea is to mount this in the frame than run a drive shaft from a motor in the front of the frame.

That looks pretty sweet Travis, but it would look better in my new JK project!

Yea I love the 3 speed but I agree to tall, top heavy and the output is always hanging up. There has got to be a way though!!

I should have this done and ready to install this weekend and start a build thread. I also have a comp on Sunday and I need to ditch the memory foams for the winter, so I have a lot of work to do. I think i am going to run a gear reduction unit so everythin will be down in the frame.

wow
your reading my mind man!
i have had a Hilux in the box for months and didn't wanna use any of the parts it came with. The Axial stuff is the way i was gonna go but it's a pain with the frame rails so tight. So maybe an Atlas style case a w/planetary trans, but now i'll be keepin' my eye on this.
Nice work!

Thanx man, I will eventually roll this into a full build thread. For now I am going to run the stock gears. I don't think there is no need to run metal gears.

you could get rid of the center gear to help compact the unit.. The center gear has no ratio effect so its not really needed in your application...

maybe run the three speed gears sideways then have the transfer case pointing down. this way you can raise the whole tranny, yet lowering the hight of the tranny. It would take alot of work making new aluminum plates, but I think it could work

never thought of that. my initial idea was to mount the motor off the side a bit and use a typical spur and pinion setup. With a gear reduction unit I guess that would not be necessary. I am going to keep going with this though and then come back to that idea later.
