Default Quad Gun Tractor

I wanted something different from the norm so i drew on my military modeling days and decided to build a Quad Gun Tractor; also known as a field artillery tractor (FAT). Don't know if this is thinking outside the box or just thinking of the box, but at any rate here's a picture of one from WWII.

Just to possibly keep things a little under control my intention is to build a crawler that looks like a 60+ year old Quad not a vehicle that handles like one. As such the plan is to drop this body on a Axial SCX10. I don't want to spend a bunch of money on this project so I'm using a lot of stuff that's laying around the garage and left over from my racing days. So here's some of the parts.

Futaba 9CAP Radio (Been in the cabinet for years and is a 75MHZ radio converted by Futaba so you plane guys can relax.)
Axial SCX10 Chassis when available
Rooster and 55turn
Futaba 9451 servos
Definitely 1 and Possibly 2 Winches the real one had a PTO winch.

I was going to wait a while before posting this thread but the body was coming along better than I expected and I'm almost to the point of needing a chassis to fit the body on but more about that later.

Here's what I started with:

Here's the basic cut out parts.

Here's the shell after first assembling it.

Here it is as it sits now with the front fenders and hood in place.

Here it is beside my Comp AX10 for a size reference.

This weekend I'll be working on some detailing of cargo compartment doors and more of the front end. Based on the dimensions given in the SCX10 thread the front shocks should fit up in the sides of the engine compartment. I'll have to wait for the SCX-10 before I'll know for sure if this is going to work as smoothly as I hope. Meanwhile if I run out of stuff to do on the body I guess I'll work on the winches.

It's pretty easy IMO. Like most things the proper tools make all the difference. The Tenax 7R or "Same Stuff" (Micromark brand it's cheaper) plastic weld and a Plasticutter make it a piece of cake.

Here's the plasticutter. http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares...oduct&ID=82131

Way different, I like it.

How did you get the front fender curve to come out so uniform, round form and heat?

I tried heat first and couldn't get it uniform. The heat gun wouldn't heat the plastic enough with the jar I was trying to use as a form behind it. It was acting like a giant heat sink.

This was done by cutting 4 pie shaped pieces. If you look under the fender in the picture beside the AX10 you can see the center ones were still there when I took the picture. The side ones were cut to make the edge of the fender. I then laminated 3 layers of 0.020" styrene over the pie shaped pieces. It came out feeling really stout, but each 0.020 sheet is so flexible the glue held as I worked around it a little at a time. Once the first layer is on the others are a piece of cake. I cut the center ones out yesterday along with a fair portion of the center part of the fender. where the chassis will go through. I made it as one big fender to ensure it would line up side to side, and to make the assembly of the hood area easier.

Man that is cool, its a very unique looking vehicle, but I think thats what makes it so cool.

Can't wait to see this all finished up. I wish I had the skills to work with styrene sheets like that.

great styrene work, Darksoul, all you need to do is practice, not that hard if you have good pics to go from. The filling and smoothing is the hard part, making it look like one piece takes time and patience.

I'll probably go with OD Green or a woodland camo of some sort.

I'd like to do a desert camo but being as the paint won't stick to the plastic the axle housings etc. are made of I'll probably go with a darker scheme to look better with the black undercarriage.

I got some more work done on the body this weekend. I cut the fenders for the grill and the pass through of the frame under it. I also added hinges for the door and a bunch of bolt heads. Long way to go but it's coming along.
