| Hey all. This is my first scale build ever, and its been enlightening to say the least. I hate double posting, but I can never seem to get on the other site any more. Anyways, this jeep is built to go, more go than show, but I am working on getting it more scale. Preformance and durability is first. In the scale light of things. I descided to build a steel chassis, with leafs, welded mounts and all. ![]() ![]() ![]() Let me rewind just a bit... This body I saw at the crawler store is what inspired the build. I always wanted a cj5 (had cj7's) so this was the perfect opp. Turns out the body is closer to 1/9 scale, which is fine with me. Of course when I first saw it, it was unpainted. ![]() So back to the frame. I went with the supersofts(leafs). And mounted them on. Everything all well and fine! Then after I dissmanteled my 2.2 comp truck, I had the axles and electronics I needed. Descided to go with the 1.9 mashers, for preformance more than anything. Plus I did not want to go over 3.75 in tire height. ![]() ![]() I then hacked up my pede tranny and made a transfer case out of it. Then welded a skid plate to the bottom to protect the pede. Now keep in mind, I never have brazed before in my life, so this is my first time at most of this. But its fun, and I am learing as I go. ![]() ![]() My plan was to be about twice as fast as my 2.2 crawler. Geared about the same though. So I descided to go with a fiago 28mm brushless planetary with a 5:1 reduction. Which my overall gearing would be about 36:1, and if you factor in the 6in tires I had on the 2.2, it came out to about a 45:1 (scaler)vs 43:1 2.2crawler gearing. Now the motor I searched long and hard on. I descided to go with a scorpion outrunner 35850kv. The ratings on this little guy were awesome, so I took a chance . My math figured the cj would carry a speed of about 13 + or - mph. Which would be good I figured for a scaler. Plus what is cool about the 380 motor set up, motor and planetary weigh the same as a stock 540 motor, but I end up saving space, which is great on a 9.5 in wheelbase truck. The motor/servo/planetary fit nicely up over the axles! I used a max shaft to join the planetary to the pede transfer case. Jato shaves from the transfer case to the tlt axles. ![]() And the 3200mah 3s lipo fits low also, right in the mid section. And I added a stinger and the body mounts which are supported velcro. ![]() Its getting late, I will post more tomorrow. Thanks for checking this out. For me and my first build, its been alot of fun! | Thanks guys, appreciate the comments! I will work on getting you up to current day. So I bolted up the mamba max, and the cs170 servo. Yes before its finished. LOL, I just had to see how it ran. Well the little 380 motor was more than I had bargained for. In fact its caused me to re-do about everything. Here is a short vid that I already posted on scale 4x4. ![]() Well the super softs ended up breaking. I don't really thing the leafs were the problem, but my set up. The scorpion is meant to go, not show. So I ended up making stronger leafs out of hack saw blades. Pretty happy with them! Now after 5 sets of leafs, 1 ring gear, two pinions, 1 axle, and 4 wheel hexes, I have learned a couple of things! LOL 1 is that leafs alone are weak, they need track bars or links, I opted for 3 links on each axle 2. plastic tlt knuckles hold up better than the aluminum ones. 3. tlt ring and pinions need shimed like a 1:1 So now that all that is over and done with. I started on my first scale item. Oh, wait a minute, first a pix of the jeep. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now for the scale item, I always wanted a rear swing out rack, so I threw one together the other night. Keep in mind that all this is unfinished. I have not sanded or painted any weld or joint. This is all new, so before I take the time to do it, I have to make sure its durable enough. this rear rack now has been rolled, and slammed many times now. So It stood the test. ![]() ![]() ![]() Yea, I know the tire is crappy! LOL I still need a rim for my extra masher. Yesterday I waterproofed everything. Mamba, reciever, servo, bec, everything. So I don't have to worry about water anymore! yepee! LOL And a parting shot outside. ![]() I have alot more to do. But I am backwards from most. I have to test and tune, then finish. My goal is to be able to beat this pretty good, and not break. And most important to beat the 2.2 scalers at the comps! LOL Things I would like to have is the rc4wd 2:1 transfer case. It would help my gc out alot, and free up more space. See ya later, thanks fow checking this out, and I will post more as I continue! |

| After relocating my transfer case higher, for better gc. I wasn't happy with the battery location. So messing around today, I relocated the battery. And added 6oz low, but way up front(hidden). Made a huge difference! Now this little 9.5 in wheelbase scaler can navigate a 58 degree slope! So I am very happy about that. Some of the 2.2 comp trucks have trouble with this hill. ![]() Yea, my antenna is lame Next up is the submarine test for the Mamba Max, outrunner, bec, servo, and reciever! |

But I did break a jato shaft yoke, right through my brass coupler. And I did make it over the crest, but its not in the video. Funny it falls right off the other side and the stinger holds it from flipping. So just alittle throttle and it pulls right out of it. I know most on 1.9's are into the modeling part of it. I am into the chassis and performance, and building things from what I have. So thats why its taking so long for the modeling details. Its kinda last on the list. | |

| Thanks maxfactor. I like it also! LOL Well today I did the water test. Thats always fun, and alittle suspensful. The good news is I dont' need to buy another Mamba max! LOL ![]() All went good, and its ready to roll. Now for the details! A scaler just is not a scaler unless you can take it through water and muck |

| Wow, almost a year ago! Figured I would update alittle bit. I ditched the super fast brushless scorpion for just a v11 55t. However I have been experimenting with a 6s lipo, so it still has some kick Decided to go topless, and add alittle detail to it. I am not a detail person, but am trying. I moved all the electrics, battery, etc... up under the hood. Added a firewall, and some floor pans. ![]() ![]() Added a collapsible windshield to go with the classic style roll bar.(so it wouldn't break off. ![]() Brazed/welded in a single roll bar and rear floor and inner fenders ![]() ![]() oh yea, can't forget about the super high power led's and the front bumper! ![]() Last edited by holycaveman; 12-17-2009 at 01:45 AM. |

| Found a dash off of a nylint that seemed to work ok, not origional, but good for now. And the steering wheel is off of a nylint radio LOL Perfect size though!. Alittle paint and the dash is passable. ![]() ![]() Next I have my first run with styrene. I used the wrong glue, so it messed up alittle. And after a year of having some scale accessories, I finally get to put them in! LOL ![]() ![]() ![]() Diamond plated the rear side panels, just like you can buy for the 1:1. Shortened the WB abit, and lowered the CG. This thing is a climber for under a 10in WB. ![]() ![]() I still need some seats and alot more detail. Will hopefully post soon with some more upgrades. Thanks for checking it out. Not too many cj builds around. For an old beater truck, this thing is awesome. Literally over a couple hundred batterypacks ran through it. Very tough , but loads of fun!! |
