Default '63 IH Scout 80 on SCX10 Chassis and IFS

Got the bug to build an early '60's International Scout 80. Just a bit more modified then a store bought version that would have been available in the 60's. Topless, and on an SCX10 based chassis. The main motivation has to be given to Szczerba as his IFS / SCX10 build from a couple years ago got me going on this project. Is an awesome build.

Body will be a styrene build. The IFS components will be mostly HPI RS4-3 parts. After reading Szczerba's thread TWICE I started to do some research on the weakness areas that he dealt with. I ordered a Blue Monkey Yeti front spool, Axial ring and pinion and Traxxas 4X4 Slash front outdrives. Going to see if this will work in place of cups, optional CVD's and swapping to the optional drift front A arms.

For now I will run matched ratios f & r until the gremlins are worked out. Rear axle will be stock SCX10 and a cantilever shock set up will be used, although I am giving thought to an Independent option as well.

Until the doner RS4 and remaining parts get here I have started the body. Very rough but slowly taking shape. This will be a slow-ish build so will post updates as they get completed.

Inspiration second to Szczerba's build!

Sketch - began with a Scout 800, modified and shortened for the 80

Cutting up the white stuff....

Still waiting for the doner RS4 so thought i'd attack some more body work. Got the initial shaping done, added the "skin". Then some more sanding - added the doors, going to wait on the wheel opening shaping until I mock up the chassis. Time for some filler!

Got a little more body work completed. Added a cowl hood, the truck floor, most filler work is complete. Just waiting for the mailman for the doner RS4 chassis now so I can start the mock up process.

Those Scout 80's had a special appeal and started a trend your build looks great.

Thanks!
Finally received the roller. As far as my great idea of utilizing the 1/16 Slash front axles - NOT......didn't work,, I wasted one set an ruined a c-hub, but hey had to experiment.
But what I did do as detailed in the photos was:
Use a Blue Monkey front Yeti spool, direct drop in to the RS4 diff carrier - NOTE: I used the "long version" - the stubby would have been better
Axial 38/13 hardened front gear set
A couple of outdrive cups I had sitting a round
And luckily the dogbones from an HPI Sprint p/n 86193 fit perfectly, they are 41mm long
I did invert the rear axle as the diff spun reverse of the RS4's

Now I still need to reinforce the front assembly, fab a servo mount, will probably hack the doner chassis, my relocate the rear shocks. And a ton of body work!

Still untested, may have a ton of gremlins, will update as I continue progress.

Progress!

Didn't work!

Did work! Had to clearance material off the c-hubs to gain droop

Upper bracket for the diff:

Thanks! I've used both Tenax 7r and currently trying Plastruct Plastic Weld, both seem to be the same formula. Don't think fargo was my build. I had the Kaiser, FC170 and a couple others.

looks awesome man! i stopped getting on this site for a wile cause i was tired of all these "builds" where people where just bolting on every vp part they could find. This build makes me want to get back out there and start working on my junk again. thanks a lot for posting and keep up the good work!

Wow.....thank you. I am really enjoying this one. I was concerned about how much articulation I would get. Just added a couple brackets, upper to lock the diff assembly, level and square in the chassis. Lower bracket will be salvaged from the RS4 lower chassis plate. Here are a couple articulation pics.

Got a little more done on the chassis and body tonight. Chassis wise I needed to mount the steering bell crank that normally mounted to the chassis plate. So, and I believe I had seen Szczerba perform this dissection, I cut a portion out of the chassis plate to use as the skid and bell crank mount. Also found a home for the servo. Will experiment to see how it performs in this position. Body work wise I'll post up pics tomorrow night.

Cut'n the chassis plate

Terrific build so far. I had visions of doing a custom Scout based on an Ambush body that I had picked up a while back, but I've passed that dream along to another member that was more ready than I was to take it on. Quick question as I've started delving into the world of styrene - what filler do you like to use?

Thanks! I've used two types, red oxide auto body surface spot putty works well. Currently I am using Squadron Products White Putty. This stuff is awesome, sands easily, dries quickly, very easy to use. Hope this helps.

Close to primer time! Had to provide some kind of access to the tail lights once I started closing the floor, so that's what the 2 small tubes are at the rear. Finished the wheel opening moldings and hinges. Installed the HH 13t Crawlmaster Expert. More filler and sanding to do!

Finished up a few details before primer. Grill, door handles and gas caps.

You are killing it. Can you share where you got that grill material? It's not easy finding "scale" mesh.
