Default Project: Land Rover Disco 3

So after searching and contemplating between different scaler bodies I finally pulled the trigger on this.

A New Bright Land Rover Discovery 3.

I will be running a TCS X-Trail frame. I had to shorten the front section slightly to get the shock towers to line up with the wheel arches properly, so I broke out the Dremel.

I will be running TLT axles and am awaiting some RC4WD lockouts for the rear and some FatRock C’s and generic aluminum knuckles for the front. The rear will have a Dinky link and the front will have an RCP Servo/Link mount. All the axle parts will be here Saturday so look for that update then.

The first body mod will be to remove the two inner most bungs that held the fake lights. The other two that pass though will be used to mount the body.

Down the road when time permits I am going to remove the bumper and add a sheet metal bumper that will be able to house the winch and replacement lights. It will be similar to this Disco 1 one.

Let me know what you think of the dirction this thing is heading!

Well I got the axles built.

Click the image to open in full size.

The front has the servo (645MG) mounted on it for now. Will probably go chassis mounted in the future, but I have something else planned and I'm not sure it there will be room.

The rear has a Dinky Link and is completly shaved.

I also got my links finished

the rear has shortened bent Axial links and the fronts are custom.

I also got these in the mail today.

80mm RC4WD Dual Springs. So she should be rolling tomorrow.

Well she's a roller!

Holy Crap these shocks are stiff!

Pay no attention to the tiny rally tires. They are just on there till i decide what tires to get.

Right now it is a toss up between the Thrashers and Creepers. I was leaning towards the Thrashers but i think that a 4" tire is going to be a little to much for this truck.

I also have these

1.9 Mayhems that I was planning on using. But I think that they are going to push the wheels a little to far out, they will be about a 1/2" wider than the current wheels. And I'm just not sure how that will look so I might have to find an alternative.

Well here is what I fabbed up.

Click the image to open in full size.

It is a Tamiya Semi 3 speed mounted to a plate that will sit over the top of the frame rails. right now I am planning on using the 55T Lathe motor and the Losi Micro servo to shift it.

I will be using an Axial trans as the transfer case for now, possibly switching out for one of the smaller 1:1 transfer cases when funds become available.

I am anxious to see how this thing moves through the gears. Look for an update later this week with it mounted to the truck!

that looks pretty cool, although if you flipped the skid/mounting plate around you could mount it to the bottom of the rails and lower the whole assembly by the height of the rails (every little bit counts).

I had thought of that but, using the 80mm shocks and the axle mounted steering servo it would be to low and wouldn't allow the axle to move throughout it's complete cycle. I might have an alternative to this though, stay tuned...

Thanks!

Well I had a chance to look at mounting it to the under side of the rails and that is going to be a no go because of where the upper links mount. Too much interference.

Took the rig back to the drawing board with the acquisition of a SCX chassis. Updated pics will be posted in the next few days...

Those shocks will loosen up a bit after a few runs. The springs...not so much.

Looks good so far ;)

Looks cool, but it's a LR3. Disco ended on Gen 2.

Actually everywhere but in the US they are still known as the Discovery.

In this case the Discovery 3.

HOLY CRAP AN UPDATE!

got some new wheels & tires. TSS Trail Readies and Rock Creepers. Nicest, most badass wheels out there!

Click the image to open in full size.

Also picked up a new trans. RC4WD R2Speed.

Click the image to open in full size.

Had to move everything forward a bit so the link would still be equal length and the shocks would align with the hoops (kinda)

Then the saw came out...

To make room for these (SDI Flares)...

All in all it is coming together. Next up is fabbing up a servo mount for the trans and for the stearing. and switching to a three link / panhard bar setup up front.

This should be fun!
