Default AMBUSH CGR - first build thread

Ok, this is going to be the start of my first build thread. It will probably be long and drawn out but that's just how I work. I have yet to buy a RTR crawler as my last two trucks have been pieced together from various sources, so I'm not new to building just new to posting so you all can criticize ( I mean comment) but euff talk let's get to the details:

TLT axles
Crushers on Hummers
RC4WD R2 trans w/ dig
TQ3 radio system
custom aluminun frame rails
RC4WD 90mm dual spring shocks
4 link front & rear
motor 55t lathe
rooster crawler
body: TBD

heres the start:

all of your comments and suggestions are welcome

Default Body mock up

OK, I found this Ambush CGR & cage on EvilBay for real cheap. The guy had painted it and didn't like how it came out, so I scored body and cage for $30. I plan to paint on the outside anyway so it will be perfect. Here is a quick mock up pic. I am going to trim up the fenders for a bit more clearance but this is just about the ride height I'm going for with full droop set up.

Default Chassis

I gave it my best shot cutting out my own frame rails, but without access to a band/scroll saw I didn't like how the prototypes turned out. The deadline for Proline's CGR build contest is rapidly approaching so I just broke down and ordered a SCX-10 frame set from TCS. This will probably change my original choice of shocks and trans but I can steal stuff off my other trucks if need be.

While I'm waiting for the SCX chassis to show up, I figured I might as well work on the body. Did a little trimming on the fenders to clear the crushers at full stuff. I used Krylon Camo Ultra Flat OD Green and I really like how it turned out. I haven't decided if I will use the Proline western bumpers or bend up some tube ones.

Looks nice! A few questions about your paint job:

1. Did you sand/scuff the body first?

2. Did you use any type of primer first or just straight Krylon?

Thanks

I lightly went over the whole body with 300 grit paper which is just enuff to take the shine off, it doesn't even leave any visible scratches in the surface. Then I cleaned it off with regular dish soap and water dryed up with a tac cloth. I didn't use any primer, just started with Krylons Ultra Flat Camo Black, then the green on top. The Krylon camo colors are made for plastic as well as a variety of other surfaces. We'll see how it holds up when I get it out on the rocks

Default Chassis

Well I got the SCX frame put together w/o any drama, It looks like it's gonna be a great platform to work from. Using my wheelbase jig, I started to put together some links. Since this truck wont see to much comp style abuse, I'm just using 4-40 all thread sleeved with 3/16 brake line and Traxxas rod ends. I had some tlt shocks that I was just using for mock up and I love the looks of the gold under this body but they don't work worth a damn. If they were smooth operators and kept the oil on the inside, I'd use em but I need to find an alternative. Maybe a shock that is a bit shorter, the ride height is a bit higher that what I was shooting for.
I'll post up some pics later tonight.

Default 4 link design

it looks like the SCX frame sets the upper and lower links very close together in regards to vertical separation at the frame end. It seems that this will cause the axle to have more of an arching path of travel rather than straight up and down. Seeing how suspension travel will be on the shorter end for this "scaler" the effect will probably be un-noticable. As for the vertical sep on the axle end, I'm going for about 50% more than the frame end, which should yeild pretty neutral anti-squat #'s right? I realize there are more variables and I have gone down the "search" route many a times, but I think vertical separation between upper and lower links is key as far as anti-squat. Please enlighten me if I am off base on this.

Default Almost there

Well finally got some time to spend on the scout this afternoon. I finished cutting and drilling out the rear upper link mount, got all the links done and sleeved, motor/trans mounted and the drive shafts cut to length and installed.

I used the metal yokes on the axle ends since they take a little more abuse from rocks.
Double trianglulated links

I used Traxxas big bore shocks from a Jato, they seem just about the right length.

Here's some mandatory flex shots, I might end up dropping the body one notch down since I have some room at full stuff

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have time to yank all the electronics out of the JK to donate to the scout and taker out for s shake down run....
