Default Off road trailer build #1 Finished!! 56k

I tougth I could post my build over here as well..

Buildthread is taken from scale4x4...

My buddy wanted a off road trailer for his rig, the Bugbuddy, see thread here:
http://www.scale4x4rc.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23198

After surfing the net, we forund te look we where after.
The build will be based on this design.
Click the image to open in full size.

Building matrials will be mainly styrene, some aluminium and steel....

The trailer hitch will be of the millitary type, like this
Click the image to open in full size.

For the eye, I will be using a bolt like this
Click the image to open in full size.

Spec will be as follows:

#90% styrene with round arches to be like design as the beetle
#Millitary hook system
#Leaf suspension
#Stock car wheel, like the beetle.
#Lights, using the spare rear vw ones..
#Lights of a 9v system
#Rack on top of the trailer.....

I started a few days ago..

My coupler consist of these parts...
A 6x4mm steel tube, some crossmember tubes from the TLT kit, 6mm washers and a eye bolt..
Click the image to open in full size.

Parts put together for mock up
Click the image to open in full size.

The trailer box itself is 12x15cm and the rails are 9.5x6mm styrene tube.
In the rear of the steel tube, I gonna epoxy a 4mm allthread.
The rear end of the rails will be cut in a angle for a batter clearance on the trails..
Click the image to open in full size.

An angle bar will be added on either side of the tube
Click the image to open in full size.

As stated obove, I will be using leaf suspension
Click the image to open in full size.

The wheelaxle is a 4mm allthread with an 4x4 tube outside, this is because I want to use regular bearings and 4,, wheelnuts.
Wheels have to be modded to allow the bearings to be mounted.
I will epoxy a small ring on either side of the wheels for the bearings to sit in..

And I don't like allthreads as u bolts, so I gonna use the u bolts from some 5mm wire clamps, the ones that is beeing used on boats..

Have glued the xmembers..
Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

The angles are on, xmember for that, all thread glued in and the tubes are glued.
Click the image to open in full size.

To get easy access to the trailer box, I used 6 screws to hold the box to the frame
Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

If you are wondering about the size of this trailer, I can place 2 stick packs in the trailer if I want toClick the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.
Tonigth I will be working on the suspension....
Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

To locate the wheelaxle on the leafs, I took some HL parts and modded them to give space for the axle...
Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Glued the spring hangers...
Click the image to open in full size.

The HL parts on the leafs.
Click the image to open in full size.

Used a tube to test...
Click the image to open in full size.

The wheelaxle is finished, it turns out that I don't need the ring to hold the bearings on the wheels.
A 1150 bearing just fit nice inside the fake wheelnuts on the stock car wheels..
This is the ride higth for now.
Axle is under leaf, but I can mount it the other way if I want to later..
Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Got mounted up the ubolts and the plates for these, and it works like I plannedClick the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Ok flex on this thing, but I don't think I can use all the travel with regular weigth in it, but with a stick pack or two, it will work good..
Without weigth in it
Click the image to open in full size.

Loaded....
Click the image to open in full size.

And here a quick video I made how it works...Click the image to open in full size.

http://vimeo.com/5526650

Click the image to open in full size.

Also made up the triangular piece that goes in front of the trailerbox. My plan is to build a box that hold the 9v battery for the ligths.
Click the image to open in full size.

I wanted to make this plate removeable, for repair, modding etc..
The plan is to get 3 parts when finished, the frame, the trailerbox and the triangular plate.
Make it much easyer to work on...
I glued two angeles to the plate to secure it to the frame..
Click the image to open in full size.

Bolted up
Click the image to open in full size.

Earlyer today I took it for å quick testdrive outside my doorstep.
It works just as I plannedClick the image to open in full size.
To test the suspension I strapped a 7,2 pack on the bed, and the leafs did a top job....hehe
My millitary hook system worked great, this will be very fun when it's finishedClick the image to open in full size.

The trailer bed is beginning to take shape...

I did install the trailer lid, but my glue wouldn't hang so good on the hinges, so I bolted them on, not pretty, but they do the job just fine...

Thanx, I really appreciate the kind words guysClick the image to open in full size.

Have done some more on the trailer this evening...

I made the fenders with 3 layers of 0.5mm styrene.
Zabbe told me this was the way to go if I wanted to build something with a arch and I wanted to let them stay in that shape.
Work like a charmClick the image to open in full size.

Couple of pics from mock up.
Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

After the fenders are glued on...
Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

The fenders are gonna be cut a bit under the bed for clearance on the rocks..
They gonna be rounded at the end to mimic the beetle fenders.

Beetle tail lights with leds will be mounted, together with the license plate light holder, so there will be no doubt that this trailer are going to be towed by a beetleClick the image to open in full size.

The beetle was yellow before like this
Click the image to open in full size.

But the owner wanted to change the paint so either the paint will be like the new RS Focus
Click the image to open in full size.

or... like a Kawazaki Ninja....
Click the image to open in full size.

So the paint on the trailer will match the beetle...

Most prob the bed with fenders will be green, all other details will be gloss or matt black, exept the gas can that will be brigth red..

Got some more done....

Got hold of some speaker mesh and did cut it out from the subwoofer ring...
Click the image to open in full size.

The fenders are cut to rigth length and the corners are rounded ala beetle...

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Made up the roofrack on mounted it on the trailer..

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

Today I made the lock for the bed lid.
I did use the same method as on my 4x4 Lunchbox trailer, using small magnets..

On the lid I did use a small magnet with a hole in the middle, securing it with a countersunk screw and nut on top
Click the image to open in full size.

For the trailer side, I used a 4mm screw with concave head that fits the hole in the magnet.
I installed a nut under the screw head to adjust the higth on the lid, and a nut under the styrene to fasten it...
Click the image to open in full size.

And here are some small test videoes.
My ballast was 2 complete wheels from bugbuddy and bicycle..

http://vimeo.com/5862491
http://vimeo.com/5862496

Same things in the trailer, but now with lock system installed
http://vimeo.com/5866273

Soon finished with the fabrication work, just have a few things left to do...
After the fab work, the sanding and painting prosess begins...

The owner wanted some chain for the lid, I obayed lolClick the image to open in full size.Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.

No guess work now that this is a trailer that are gonna be towed by an beetle.Click the image to open in full size.

Have made some heavy duty safty chains for the trailer

I also installed led's in the beetle clusters and made up the license plate ligthning, but they will be connected whrn the trailer is painted..

This thing turned out awsome. I like the trailer idea with the volkswagen, but I am partial to them anyway. Keep up the great work.
