Default Need your opinion : stock Hi Lift on the sand

Hello everyone,

For the need of a shooting for Sony Ericsson we will use a few RC vehicules including some Hi Lift Tundra (we want this body and won't have time to adapt it to another chassis). The film will be done on a sand beach and I'm afraid that the stock hi-lift won't be perfect for that especially with its small diameter tires.

Had you try to run it stock on the sand before, if it didn't work what simple would you suggest, we won't have time to make any major mods on it (we have 5 to build in 4 days)

Here is the first video we made in Paris for the same client to give you an idea of what we 're planning to do for this one.

Thanks in advance.

Gilles

Sweet video, Gilles!

I can't offer much advise on the highlift, but as you probably know, sand is not just sand. Sand can be like concrete or light and fluffy, or a combination (concrete crust with fluffy underneath). I think with the stock highlift tires you'll have problems in the soft stuff, but would be fine near the water.

It's what I thought, we will probably run them only on the dry/soft sand, not near the water because we want the vehicules to interact with the people.
I guess it has enought torque but the tires are way too small, maybe some 2.2 would do the job.

2.2 would be out of scale with that truck maybe some rock crusher XT from RC4WD. They clean out good. Great Video my the way. Nice to see RC used in a new/different way.

I've driven a stock f350 highlift around in the soft sand before with stock tires, it did okay, almost any other 1.9 tire would do better though.

First off, let me say awsome video!!!!! Great job, I love all of the peoples reactions!!!

Now for tires, you could try the RC4WD Rok Lox. Or take a look at the RC4WD Mud Thrashers....well look at all their tires!!

Im sure you could find something based on size and tread pattern

RC4WD.com is the site, if you didnt know.

Look forward to seeing the second video

My wallet do know too well RC4WD, but it's not imported here and my agency won't take the risk to order them, even from Germany, we will do this next thursday. However we already bought the 4 Tundras and 5 Kyosho Ultima DB and a Clod Buster, can't wait to see this.
I know also it won't look scale to use 2.2 but our only fast solution are some CR01 stock tires, the only choice we had at the LHS here.

Thanks all for your advices, will keep you updated

Last weekend i took my SCX10 based rig to the beach and drove it all the way from soft sand to the harder packed wet stuff with no problems. I am running 1.9" steel OEM wheels from RC4WD and Rok Lok tires....Funny thing about this video is that I was thinking of an ad campaign when i was driving the beach. Everyone had fun with the rig and had no idea where the driver was. My rig happens to be donned to look like a company truck for In And Out Burger Too!!! I botched a paint job so i cut out stickers and put them on the hood and both doors.

If you need a driver in the states please think of me!!! I had a ton of fun doing it! Peoples reactions are priceless. I wonder how many people ate at In And Out Burger after their day on the beach?

I will run the exact same set up to film from my SCX10, have no worry about this chassis running and the sand. It's just a pity we couldn't order Rock lox fast enough for the Tundras.

This next ad will happen in Cannes, in the South of France.

something wide, fair lug spacing, more scoop type lugs, and make sure you get some wheel speed behind them

Thanks all for the help, we finally did it. I had no choice but to use 2.2 (from CR01 kits that the LHS sold us) my agency didn't want to take the risk to order tires from RC4WD. spent the whole friday night lifting all the Tundra bodies and locking their diffs, we also had to put all the stickers the same night in the basement of the hotel, that was pretty insane (we were running on Redbull).

here are a few pics :

the guy who helped me with the stickers, never played with RC cars before

Wow! What a great job! It's funny, apparently kids from all over the World have the instinct to chase R/C cars! My youngest (7 yrs old) still does it. Good choice with the tires, plenty of "floatation" on those!

Cool vids. I would have said get some stock TLT tires, they would have given you plenty floatation on sand

I wish we had the possibility to choose some other tires, we didn't have time to order anything, just bought those CR01 tires from the LHS, it worked OK though (my SCX10 did a lot better )

Sadly it's a huge waste, the client wants to keep them but doesn't have a clue on how to fix/use them. I wish I they gave some cars to the people who worked on the project, especially the drivers.
