| 1986 Toyota IFS build
I've been craving a IFS build lately. I loved the way my CC-01 would crawl with fitting IFS realism as I've long been a import 4x4 fan. However, I've been restricted build wise with the small cc-01 1/12 size and poor kit construction. I've always thought a properly scale and sturdy design would likely do quite well and if not it would be unique to drive among my other builds creating a fresh driving experience. Sure, Twin hammers, Yeti, Score truck, kits are out there. They are either to big or don't seem to have the correct scale character for a 1.9 scale truck build. The new Proline Toyota shell is pretty popular among locals. I bought one the day it was released. I really want to use it but I want it to seem unique while using it. IFS is the answer. The new Scx10II axles really opened the door for me on this project. With the small compact ring gears suddenly it doesn't seem as hard to mock up into a scale appearing IFS setup that has performance potential. So I've ordered the parts. So far I have ordered: Scx10II axles Yeti C-hubs and knuckles MIP Slash 4x4 front driveshafts Proline Toyota body SCX10 Transmission Last edited by Mnster; 11-10-2016 at 03:22 AM. |

I'm curious to see how you make it work. I'm trying to figure out a better setup for my humvee build with ifs/irs. So far the best i have is a stretched 1/16 slash 4x4 that its sitting on now, but its severely lacking in the steering and looks departments.

I set out with the intension to build the drivetrain as beefy as possible to avoid any weakness. So the MIP driveshafts seemed like the ideal choice. No weak dog bone end and a high quality slider to avoid binding. The problem is nothing ever just bolts up. The factory yokes for the Slash put the outputs to far out. If I mounted them in this position, the suspension arms would have to be pretty short and the bulkhead wide due to clearances. So I bought some Slash rear stub axles. I plan to machine these to fit the axial locker and reduce the diff output width by almost 1". I remachined the stub axles to fit the Yeti knuckle assemblies. The Yeti knuckles have the bearings closer together. So making it fit required a bit of filing while being spun in a drill. After I make the shorter diff outputs it should come close to 7 5/16" hex to hex the width of the rear axle. Last edited by Mnster; 11-10-2016 at 03:46 AM. |

Awesome, glad you were able to figure it. Itll be stout for sure with the MIPs. These are the types of builds I love to follow |

Thanks! The wheels came today. I wanted something sort of 90's SR5 looking while having a slightly more modern racing look. I think these will give it the right appearance. Still unsure of the tires I want to run. Something meaty but not to tall or short. Once the build gets further along I'll have to figure out sizes. |

Awesome! Ive started and failed to complete many times to create a capable IFS rig, My first scale rig was way back when, but durability and performance were lacking with what I was working with. Ill be interested to see how this plays out |

I like what your doing with this one! I have a new set of MIP slash stubs that I will donate to the cause if you want them. I have no clue how I ended up with them I've never owned a slash.

I sized up some tires. Looks like I need some 4.25" tires to give a good balance of scale and performance. The Flat irons would be great performers. On the other hand I feel like they sort of date the truck and take away some of the scaleness. However, I'm struggling to find tires with a scale appearing open tread design. I crawl on mostly mud and trees. The Rc4wd MTZ is a possiblity though it seems to tight down the center. Baja Claws are very nice as well but a friend has them on a similar rig and I don't want to copy his build. Last edited by Mnster; 11-11-2016 at 02:25 AM. |

Check out the 1.7 x2 Irocks. They look great on a 1.9 wheel and go like hell in your type conditions. That's my personal go to small tire. . Let me know. There is a fellow club member that has 5 new he isn't using he's now a big tire guy lol.....

Thanks for all the suggestions. The 1.7"s are fantastic tires I use the Boggers on my Sami build. The only problem I have is that the carcass gets really rounded when stretched over a 1.9. The Proline Swamper didn't work that well for me in a 2.2 on a different build. Though it may have been a foam setup issue it just seemed like the carcass was to thin and the lugs just bent over. I think I'll likely probably settle for them down the road once the build is finished. When performance takes lead over making a clean new truck. I just ordered a set of 1.9 MTZ's We'll see how they fit the build. I liked the narrow appearance. A friend of mine also had them on his 1:1 4runner for a while so they are etched in my mind as Toyota tires. Performance likely won't be super great but I can swap them out to something else later. |

Unfortunately I'm still waiting on tower to ship my ar40 axles. So today I decided to try to take a shot in the dark at making a chassis for this thing. Eventually. I ended up with something that sort of resembles a Toyota pickup frame. I'll admit the bends are not the same as a Toyota but at least it's a good straight platform to start from. |
