old comp truck turned scale truck (the rebuild!) I decided to start a new thread since i completely rebuilding this so for those interested here is the first thread: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/1-9-scale-rigs/280059-old-comp-truck-turned-scale-truck.html After beating the old girl thoroughly over the winter the truck started to show it's age http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1252.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1253.jpg Something in the front doesn't look quite right huh? http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1254.jpg yep the links were worn out and i couldn't keep the suspension from flopping. From the beginning i knew it was only temporary as i had full intentions to make the uppers more scale looking. I also had a little trouble with the rear axle. Oops! http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1255.jpg All this combined with the need to replace the chassis with rails to keep it in class 2 i decided it was time to tear it down and rebuild. the first step was obviously to tear it apart and within 15 minutes i had it to bare bones http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1256.jpg And was left with a pile of wrinkled sheet metal http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1257.jpg next i blasted it http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1300.jpg and cut off the frame http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1301.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1303.jpg I'm keeping the rails for another project more TCC orented then i bent up some rails http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1306.jpg and mocked them in place http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1304.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1305.jpg with the rails situated i did some figuring and started on the center skid. I began with some square stock, narrowed then cut into a U and tacked to some sheet metal http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1372.jpg then i fully welded it and trimmed the U out. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1373.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1374.jpg Next up was the axles. I made a 3 link truss http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1398.jpg I fixed the rear shaft, shaved both of them down and added the trusses http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1399.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1400.jpg and finally mocked it all into place http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/IMG_1402.jpg And yes I'm moving the tranny under the hood and running my homemade T-case from the willy's build to get a full depth interior and more scale points. In all not to bad so far. I stole the lower links from my sportsman truck so the fronts need to be a little shorter but otherwise it is coming along good. |
Just get sick of this rig already...I'm ready or it to be in my stable"thumbsup" |
Awesome! I love this thing! Not much time left though, you better get moving. |

Small update. After trying to align everything by eye and just not being satisfied with the result, I looked for something to make a jig and found these PVC channels left over from when i installed new windows last summer. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0155.jpg with everything square and true i added tabs to mount the skid plate http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0157.jpg Then, after aligning the skid using the jig, trimmed it to fit http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0158.jpg wanting to keep everything flush, and make it removable, I drilled, tapped, and countersunk 8 2MM screws. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0161.jpg That's it for now |
Got a bit more done Moved onto the upper links. Made some tabs for the front and tweaked them to keep the rod ends strait http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0169.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0170.jpg Then since the frame kicks up higher in the rear I added a plate inside and ran the mount right through the frame http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0171.jpg overall shot from the side http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0168.jpg Next is the front shock hoops. I wanted All-Pro style hoops so i bent up some tubing http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0172.jpg Tacked them to some bar stock http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0174.jpg fabbed up some tabs http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0173.jpg brazed them to the tubing http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0176.jpg then tacked it in place http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0175.jpg I won't know if that's the final position until i get the rest of the mounts done and get the whole thing sitting on it's own with all the weight added. That's it for now |
this thing is the bees knees, awsome work!!!"thumbsup""thumbsup" |
Got a little more progress on this. After i finished the front hoops i added upper mounts for the rear shocks http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0388.jpg then i made a temporary mount for the tranny http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0387.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0386.jpg even got it to fit under the dash http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0389.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0391.jpg now it's finally sitting on it's own. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0385.jpg but i'm not to happy with the flex in the rear http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0384.jpg But i got to test it a bit and the drive train works great and at this point that's all i care about. More later. |
nice work so far."thumbsup" |
holy man a rebuild already???? hahaha geez your hard on these things!!!! looking good im excited to see it finished."thumbsup" i havent done nothing with mine, got my shock hoops bent up and just need to tack them onto the chassis. |

more progress finally. I wasn't satisfied with the rear travel after i took it for a spin. The shocks were more vertical then before and they also didn't look very scale that way so i went a different direction. I started by making some tabs and adding tapped holes for adjustment. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0932.jpg Then i added them to the 3 link truss i made earlier http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0933.jpg here it is in place http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0934.jpg Next i needed an upper mount. I've seen others use the tubing through tubing method so i thought i'd give it a try. Started with 1/4" dia tube and drilled 2 3/16" holes in it http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0936.jpg Then slid tubing into it http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0937.jpg then i drilled holes in the frame http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0938.jpg and finally brazed it all up http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0939.jpg Here it is with the shocks attached http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0947.jpg looks a lot cleaner now. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0944.jpg And the flex? now this is much better! http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0945.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0949.jpg Here it is with the rear fender on for a better idea of how much droop it has now http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0950.jpg i need to add bump stops yet but otherwise I'm pretty happy with the result. Next up is the rear tire carrier. In an effort to get the most points with the new scale rules, i decided to move the tire carrier to the bumper but not wanting the tire to sit high or hang out over the rear i decided to think outside the box a bit. The first thing i needed to do was some chopping http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0952.jpg then i bent up some tubing and brazed some small tubes on the ends http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0956.jpg next i made the tire mount by brazing a screw to some tubing and coat hanger wire to the nut http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0957.jpg then attached it to the mount http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0958.jpg to attach it to the bumper I welded a screw to the bumper. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0959.jpg and here is the tire in place. now i get the scale points without any impact on the performance on the truck http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0961.jpg now here is the neat part http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0955.jpg Yep, it swings out. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0960.jpg finally to attach the other side i drilled a hole in the bumper http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0962.jpg Added a nut http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0964.jpg and screwed the carrier on http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0963.jpg I'm getting closer to completion but i still have a bit to do. more later. |
you suck! :flipoff: 'Gonna be ready for Sunday? I might have to but some tires for the Honcho so I can run against you in class 2. "thumbsup" |
I'm trying. I might run it but it's not going to be done by any means. |
I got some more work done on the truck When i had the suspension worked out, and with the spare tire taking the place of the tailgate, i started looking at the tubing left and decided to start over with the bed of the truck so out came the cut-off wheel http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0966.jpg then i added a cross member to the back of the chassis http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0967.jpg next came new tubing http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0968.jpg and with the fenders mocked in place, tacked the bumper on http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0969.jpg next came supports for the tubing that go around the lights http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0970.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0971.jpg Last to go in was the mounts for the battery box http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0972.jpg and here is the box in place http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0973.jpg With everything in place i tore it down and brazed all the joints then put it all back together with the old body for some test runs to work out the bugs http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0977.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0978.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0981.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0982.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0983.jpg After a few test runs i had a reacquiring problem. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG0985.jpg The Traxxas shaft from the tranny to the T-case was just not up to the task for obvious reasons, so to alleviate the problem i decided to modify an MIP shaft but it would need some serious surgery to match the length of the Traxxas shaft. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1007.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1009.jpg in a nutshell i had to cut the tube section out of the outer shaft keeping the splined section. then cut the smooth section, and a bit from the end, off the inner part http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1013.jpg Then i bored the bell and machined the shaft to fit http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1015.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1018.jpg here is is mocked in place http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1019.jpg then i broke out the TIG and burned it tigether http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1022.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1023.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1028.jpg Now i have BEEF! http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1029.jpg A little more testing and i'll be ready for paint and details. |
impressive sir. keep up the great work"thumbsup" |
This build is looking great can't wait to see the finished product! |
omg... paypal ready |
sweet.. looks a lot cleaner now!!! even though i thought the old version was awesome too.."thumbsup" nice job on the drive shaft also..lol |

Well after some weeks of testing i decided the truck was good enough to compete with so i proceeded to finish it up. The last couple details i that needed addressed were tabs for the rear quarters to hold the back in place since i have no tailgate now http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1303.jpg And mounts for the seats. I did this by adding a simple bar with tabs that allowed me to screw into an existing slot on the bottom of the seats http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1302.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1300.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1299.jpg With that done it was the normal process of blasting and painting. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1304.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1305.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1306.jpg Then i assembled the chassis and electronics in preparation for the sheet metal http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1307.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1308.jpg And here is the body in place with the new paint job http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1310.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1309.jpg I also got door handles and emblems on this time. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1311.jpg Ah, look at that sparkle! http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1313.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1312.jpg And here is some pics of it in full comp trim http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1320.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1319.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1316.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1318.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1321.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1323.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1324.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...k/CIMG1328.jpg I ran it in a comp this past weekend. I'll post more on that later |
