Szczerba's F-Toy #744

10 Attachment(s)
I have always liked the Reign F-Toy cage. Just finally decided to build one up WITH Toyota axles.

Ultimate Cast Yota axles from RC4WD
SCX Chassis, with a little bit of frame widening/straighten and tinkering.
Took me about 5 hours total to figure everything out. I have never, ever setup a leaf spring chassis, so it was all new to me. Did my darnest to keep everything square and keep the leafs running true.

This is still in post-mock up stage with all 3 leafs on each corner. I was just looking to set the wheelbase and ride height today.
I think the wheelbase is right around 11.9" right now.

Not sure how long this build will take but I wanna have it running and crawling good in less than 3 weeks, ECC bound "thumbsup" .
Pictures.

Thanks. I haven't seen many and I know I haven't seen many with yota axles. :ror:
They ultimate yota axles are sweet. I'll either have to do the SLW mod on the 1.9 wheels or just get some hexes that are about 5mm wider for the tires to clear everything. The yota's are about 1/4"-1/2" narrower hex to hex than the axials.

I'll be getting some red leafs, spring wedges, 90mm scale shocks and some seats soon.

Got the homemade servo mount done and made a panel or two. Using Klabeaume's http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/vendo...interiors.html . Sorry, Kevin, had to hack it up!
The tran/spur is going to be right in the middle of the "cab". I got the spur cover to cover it up somewhat. I'll do some more "hiding" before too long.

Tire and wheel combo makes the rig look mean, cant wait to see how it turns out

Just a suggestion, most,Toyota have the front leaf hangers in the front and shackles in the back, this also saves your leaf springs I believe. Truck is looking good btw! Can't wait to see it finished

Looks like the drag link and tie rod might be fighting for the same space.

Just in case, here's more inspiration.

Yea, Your right. I could have sworn I saw one F-Toy with the shackles up front. But that might have been when I was looking other leaf spring setups on trucks to get an idea of how to set it up.
The hangers and shackles are bolted on so I might be able to swap them around without too much of a hassle. Now is the time to do it while I am building it up.

Thanks for the comment. I hope I can make it look like a decent F-Toy when I am done.

I had all the springs on when I setup the servo mount. Then removed the two helper springs off and got alot more flex/sag. I guess I'll just move the servo back a little bit more.

thanks for the link. Some cool f-toys over there.

RC4WD 90mm scale dual rate shocks ordered and got some leaf wedges coming too. I could have made them from some square key stock but for $9, ill save my time.
Red springs from RC4WD are up next for the parts list. Maybe a dig?

Should I keep the side panels on the inside or move them out? I can drill/tap the cage with 2mm hardware and bolt the panels on the from the outside if I move the panels to the outside. Did that on the 4x4 trophy truck build.

.....

Getting my usual one hour a night fab time.

Swapped the shackles and hangers. The front hangers are temp and will be fit correctly next. I know they are single shear right now. :ror: I have to cut the scx frame a touch to get the outer bracket on. And then a little bit of welding, not much.

Re cut the servo mount to raise the servo up a bit. Clearances are tight but it all flexes and clears right now.

Some ol' Proline hammers, cut/shut and narrowed. Just put these on for mock the flex and tire clearances. Mainly to get more flex for building/mocking up right now.

Welded up some RCP Crawler Fab tabs to mount up some panels and interior. Fabrication*Tab*-*Drilled...

Panels are .040 styrene for right now.

Electronics are temporary on the back panel. Seats will be installed at some point. Getting the electronics under the dash was going to be a chore, so I took the easy route.

Installed some 90mm dual rate shocks stripped down and added leaf wedges front and back.

Up next is drill out the 1.9 wheels to accept SLW hubs to widen out the track a touch.
Still have to make a passenger panel. Not sure if i'll keep the styrene or switch to metal panels.

I like it. "thumbsup"

Thanks. All the weight I have left to add is one side panel and some seats.
Running the hilift spring. No helper springs. RC4WD red springs on the way. It flexes really good right now. Once I get the wheels bumped out a bit the flex will increase a touch.

Naw, I just gave the cage the #744 production number. But that will be the running number if any are added. Not sure on the paint scheme just yet. I'll rock the white panels for now.

I just tested this rig on a 850mah 3s pack. It crawls pretty darn good with the limited flex spring setup. It is really stable and only weighs 5.5lbs right now. It's alot of fun to drive. Really have to pick the line and keep all 4 tires on the ground.

A dig in the near future?

I dunno, this one may stick. Well, I say that about all the wicked time comsuming builds I do. Cherokee minus some doors, 6x6, TTC JK minus some doors, 4x4 trophy truck, I'll quit listing.

I think of it as a catch and release program with my builds. I build them up and then release them back into the wild. :ror:

Got a little bit of video before a wicked grinding noise in the front axle started. Might get it uploaded tonight. This F-Toy can crawl! 8)

Re: F-Toy #744

Quick video. One more short video uploading. All I could get before I had to pull the front axle apart.

It's about 5.5lbs and well balanced. The springs and shackles are already loosening up. Probably chino mod them before too long.
