Default transfer case question

i'm pulling parts together to build a scx10 axled 6x6 rig. i'm going to run a standard scx10 tranny into a rc4wd disruptor transfer case. the question is should i get the transfer case that gears up (2.18:1) or down (.75:1)? if i wanted to maintain a final drive ratio similar to the stock scx10 which is the best option? i know i can drop in different spur/pinion gears on the scx10 tranny to adjust. is one method better from a strain on the system point of view? i was leaning toward gearing up (2:18:1).

Get a GCM one that is a 1:1.

i was looking at that but the placement i plan on having would allow for a disruptor t-case better. having the input centered above the lowers is ideal. the gcm (or killer) t-cases could do the job but not as well.

Just fyi 2.18\1 is lower gearing, input turns 2.18 times per 1 turn of output. The other .75 \1 input turns 3/4 of a turn to 1 turn of the output. The easiest would be to get the over driven one .75/1 and gear down your trans.

glad you pointed out that i'm bass-ackwards! so the .75/1 is what i was thinking would be the best fit for me. i have heard that gcm may be coming out with a 2-speed transfer case. need to look into that.

I ran the 2.18:1 disruptor for a while. I liked it. Very bulletproof, but it lacks the wheelspeed I desire. Too low geared for my liking. I would also suggest something in the 1:1 ratio area and play with the transmission gearing to fine tune it.

I have a Cole's Crawlers 1:1 tcase and an axial tranny. Decent wheelspeed with a 27t on 2s but not enough crawl. Already running a 14t pinion so I'm going to a 35turn and a 3s batt. I think the 1:1 tcase is the way to go. Gearing it down (up numerically) would make it harder to find that sweetspot as it would be a more narrow range.

do you have a link or contact for cole's crawlers products? i'm searching around and can't seem to find it.

They made them on the side, starting in 2008. Not sure he is still making them.

On a multi axle rig a little more reduction wont hurt.. Odds are you will be pulling things around and doing slow crawling more then jumping it..

i keep going back and forth. with the .75:1 it seems like it is closer to a 1:1 so if i wanted to slow it back down to a stock final drive ratio it wouldn't take much of a change in pinion/spur. the 2.18:1 seems like it would take a lot to get back to the stock final drive ratio. if it helps i current run an scx10 with 87T spur, 14T pinion with a novak 18.5T brushless on 2s. nice slow speed control. not much of a speed demon, which works for me.

i need to find the math on here. what spur/pinion combos would i need with each t-case to get back to the stock final ratio.

You can run some numbers here:
R/C Calculations

or
R/C Calculations

Use the "Additional gear ratio" for that of your transfer.

I think the stock ratio high for multi axle.. the trucks are heavier, they do more work, wheel speed is almost never a issue.

I would pick lower gears and more motor every time.. to quote Holmes Volt up Gear down..

I haven't plugged in the numbers yet but seems like I'm now leaning towards 2.18:1. I may be looking to pull a trailer so low speed with lots of torque will be key.
