Tommy's Class 2 KoH Jeep JK

Hey folks,

Well, it's been a long time coming, but I think I'm finally ready to start on my first Class 2 rig. I've been stock piling a few nice bodies, but have been having a devil of a time figuring out what I want to build. I wanted to use a body I already own. I wanted the rig to be reasonably competitive. And I wanted the body to retain some element of it's original form. I'm drawn to rigs that keep most of their body panels and keep most of their overall shape and profile. In the end, I finally decided on a body to use and also determined what style of rig I'm after. Be forewarned, this may be a slow going build so if you have A.D.D., you may want to look elsewhere. :ror:

Of course, I will not be building it identically to the 1:1, but I'm taking heavy amounts of inspiration from it. Yeah, rigs like this have been built before, but I don't care. I like it. I'm building it. :flipoff: It will be SCX10 based. In fact, back around last Christmas I was one of the lucky winners in the giveaway RCC was having and I won an SCX10, along with some other great products from RCC vendors. That SCX10 will be the basis for this build.

Here's the overall "rough draft" of the plan for this rig....

Powertrain:
Motivation will either come from a HH13t Crawlmaster Pro or I may opt for a Tekin Pro4 3300kv if I decide to get kookie.
3s batteries, but may consider 4s.
ESC will either be a Tekin FXR or RS Pro.
Dinky R/C's Gr7 transmission and Split Skid will be put to use with HD internals throughout.
Axial axles will be built up, likely with all kinds of Vanquish goodies.

Chassis/Body:
SCX10 rails will form the basis, but there will be plenty of tubework to accompany it.
Roof is coming off and some surgery will be performed on the body, but nothing too drastic since I want to keep it recognizable as a JK.

Wheels/Tires:
Tires are going to be Pit Bulls (they just speak to me!).
Wheels are either going to be Locked Up RC or possibly Vanquish OMF (still up in the air on that one).

So stay tuned and I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with my progress... "thumbsup"

Thanks!
Tommy

I live in UT country. No rig I ever own will be orange. :ror:

But I'd better get the picture:banter ratio better by posting some progress pics, huh? :lmao: Well, I've got a bunch of parts on order with Locked Up RC so I'll have stuff to share real soon. "thumbsup"

Thanks! Hopefully the final product comes out as nice as what's in my head. I've definitely got some roadblocks I'm envisioning that will require some work, but you can't succeed unless you try, right?? :ror:

And pictures are coming! Just waiting on some more goodies to arrive....

This was my first real build since coming back to RCRC from 2008.
great choice for a build up Tommy!!!
btw:subscribed!!!

I remember when I first saw your rig and I was so disappointed! :lmao: I had pretty much already made the decision to build this and then saw your pics a few days later and it kinda let the wind out of my sails a bit. I thought I had a unique idea! But that's okay! "thumbsup" It was just a funny coincidence! BTW, I looked for your build thread, but couldn't find one. I thought you had one for it?

Anyway, I agree....great choice for a scaler, man! "thumbsup"

you must be refering to "Young version's" JK he posted up?? in which whos thread its not!! but I agree nice JK for sure.:ror:

to the point, I really cant wait to see how this turns out, i think you can come up with a finished product that will be very clean, "STRAIGHT", and match that 1;1 or better!! why not Monsters for wheel?? with 2.2 flat irons :lmao: JK (just kiding)

oh also, you did mention taking the roof off? off what body? yes a JK but which one? new bright I hope!! but you know with a build like this there is nothing wrong with a lexan clip and panels.

Im watching this one!

Thanks, man! Actually, I'm undecided on the wheels. I love the Monsters from Mayhem and they're still being considered. My first choice would likely be the Vanquish OMFs, but a set looks like it would set me back $200!! WAY too rich for my blood. And of course, I love Locked Up's wheels so they may be the option I go with.

Oh, and yes, definitely using a New Bright body. I've had two of these stashed away for the last few years. I *hate* lexan bodies. No matter what you do, they never have the right level of realism, y'know? For a tuber with panels, they're fine....but I want this one to be more of a hybrid racer based off a real truck, not a tuber. Well, at least that's my plan! :lmao:

Re: Tommy's Class 2 KoH Jeep JK

One of the few parts I have at the moment is my Delrin Gr7 transmission from Dinky R/C. It utilizes the main gear from an Axial transmission's internals as the "spur". Of course, this means a very small pinion gear is mandatory to get comparable ratios to a stock SCX10 setup. I'm starting off with a 9t pinion because of the high strung nature of the Crawlmaster Pro 13t.

In order to get everthing working, the stub of one output needs to be cut so it won't contact the motor....and only one output is needed anyway. For this "sacrificial" side, I used a stock Axial output.
http://tommyr.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuf.../IMG3297-L.jpg

The other end is an Axial hardened output and it's all wrapped up with a Robinson Racing hardened "spur". Hopefully, it'll be fairly bulletproof.
http://tommyr.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuf.../IMG3298-L.jpg

Here it is all meshed up with the RC4WD 9t pinion. The pinion concerns me because there's so little material there and I suspect the set screw could strip easily. The hole on the other side stripped already.....and very easily.
http://tommyr.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuf.../IMG3313-L.jpg

Another option I have is to use some Hot Racing pinions. But they'll need to be bored deeper or the motor shaft will need to be cut down. This is as far as the pinion will go on the motor shaft. Way too long.

Here's the completed Gr7 ready to be installed.
http://tommyr.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuf.../IMG3314-L.jpg

And some Vanquish hawtness waiting to be installed.

Ah! I didn't realize RC4WD was also making a version of the Allied wheels. At least Mayhem makes a 1.9" version! 8)
