Time for an update
After the comp season ended, I decided I wanted some more steering in this rig. So I decided to do the XR mod to the front axel.

This was not a trivial mod for me. Having to cut up perfectly good parts was a bit disturbing...screw it up, and you gotta buy it again. With that...out came the cutting tools... WarPig did a good write up on the how to and I saw a link somewhere that detailed the splined addition to WarPig's original. I used the splined version.

First up is a picture of a stock housing and the modified version (on the right)
I had broken one before, so this cut wasn't such a leap

I really like this spool....there is absolutely zero slop with this locker. Grip-fab makes them. DieLaughing in the forum....I have two sets. Second pic is sitting on an empty .44 shell

Pic of the spool loaded

And with the splined beef tubes. Chris the battery man makes these, by order only if you're interested. Creation fab

So the other cut/mod is to the XR10 universal axels. Pictured here they are pre cut...but flattened to fit in the spool/locker of your choice. Filed down slowly until it was a nice tight fit.

After the cut to length...about .3" cut off...I actually had to take some more off after fitting it all up. The flange on the universal should fit snugly in the Chub.

Checking the fit....actually a poor picture of what I was looking for

And assembled axel...steering links will have to be made...I need 6" eye to eye.
And it looks like I have 1/2" wider as well...a good friend warned me about that.
If I get the steering I want, it will be worth it....

More later when I get the links made and mount the axel on the truck...

Thanks for looking

Actually pretty happy with it...the screws that came with it were a built too long..so I shimmed them a bit...couldn't figure out why it wouldn't turn...when I backed them out it would.

Also got a longer servo arm, and did the over/under gears in the axles....although I left the front at stock gear ratio 38/13 instead of the 36/14.

Some trusted crawler mates suggested that. I think you were one of those

Wish I had funds for this steering mod. I am finishing up my rebuild on the C2 rig, got to get another C1 rig built up for JoJo and contemplating a C3 rig build. Well as for the advice on upgrading your rig that's what the og's are for, helping guys out with different tips on how to improve the rig performance. Just happy you to took the advice from me and the other guys with a positive outlook. I watched not only the rig evolve every comp but your driving skills as well. You started to realize and see different lines and approaches that you wouldn't have seen at the beginning of the season and realized what modifications to make to the rig based on its reactions to terrain. Winning season in my eyes

Thanks James. Toward the end I could see the improvement and felt like all the effort wasn't wasted. Makes me look forward to this year's competitions.

To the trained eye, you'll see there's something wrong here....

A fellow crawler on this forum complained a bit about the fitment issue with VP chubs and knuckles rubbing on the inside of the wheel. I suggested he buy VP wheels and the rub would be gone...I stand corrected. Granted, and I'll give VP the benefit of doubt, this is a wraith knuckle with a 1.9 wheel after all ...wraiths run 2.2s

I noticed a little rub at the link arm...in fact it was tight and wouldn't roll at all. So...the inner ring had some lip on it. I took the lip down with the dremel. Not the ideal thing to do, but there was no turning back at this point. WELL, one wheel apparently didn't have enough taken off. Twisted the chub, knuckle and the splined beef tube . This truck has some torque.

It was all fixable

So on with the finished goods:

Had so much more steering, had to adjust my EPA....got it just right

It's hard to say I have 50% more steering, but that's probably close. My outer steering circle is right at 3' 4"... It was close to 6' before.
I'd label this an effective mod....

Have you tried running the tie rod behind the axle or even under the servo plate so you don't have it way out in front hanging up on rocks?

I looked at some BTA set ups on here...wasn't very impressed with anything I saw...too much linkage going on it seemed. Actually never thought of under the servo plate. Might have to look into that one.

I made several links before I got it where it wouldn't hit anything. The last one was my last piece of all thread. If you think about it, the linkage sits high, about a half inch higher than center pumpkin, if I encountered a rock/rocks that high with the linkage, there's other issues with that line even with BTA linkage. I'll have to pay closer attention to wheel placement moving forward. At least try this set up for awhile....

I'm glad it worked out for you Greg. A 50% increase in steering is quite an improvement.

WOW Greg, you been wrenching away. Those are some serious mods to get extra steering. I guess in Comps you need every little bit of steering you can squeeze out of your setup.

Im glad you put me on to your update.

Good Job buddy

Will keep watching!

It's old school...older than the runner...but I have to make fender flairs for it and make it legal...has to be mid tire. If it works like I plan it'll be even cooler than the original Ozark Runner. Might get another sticker like it though....

I won't let the cat out of the bag till I know it'll work...I'll know this weekend

Class 2 is widest point of the cab at the doors to the inside of the tires
