Holy crap what happened!? Ok, all joking aside. I realized i was going to need more leafs to carry the weight of the truck, so in order to keep the plates as level with the skid as possible i needed to shave more off the notch. once i did that i made them permanent Then i re-thought the suspension. After looking at the way i had it set up i realized that the geometry just didn't work and moving the lower links would make a whole lot more work that may end up making the handling questionable, so after thinking about it i decided to change my tact and use the springs strictly for carrying weight. To do that i threw the old lower links back on. Then I needed a way for the spring eye to move while the suspension cycles. the solution was simple shackles, so i whipped up a set. Then attached them to the axle end of the links then i attached the springs to the pads then to the shackle Now i have the truck suspended with free range of motion while keeping the geometry that i know works Everything lines up good as well Here it is siting on all fours at about ride height. and of course the flex shots In all i'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I haven't decided on shocks yet but i have a set of TLT's that i may use. that will be later.

With the springs sorted i got the shocks mounted. i had to drill the lower holes through the axle and tap them. then threw on some old TLT shocks i had lying around They looked good but kept sticking in spots so i swapped them for the associated shocks i had on before. then i slapped the electronics back in, threw the body back on, at least as much as i could, and took it for a test drive. I am absolutely satisfied with the conversion! Not only did i get the scale points but because the springs are set so far out on the axle it climbs very well and still maintains lots of flex. I'll have some video up soon.

WOW! Quarter Elliptical suspension!! The last pic needs to be in the "RC or not" thread!!! Very nicely done. I watched the first re-build thread too....good stuff. |

Thanks! I forgot to post a couple things. I got the roof bar finished with a new piece TIG'd in place Then i addressed the front axle. The pinion was originally flat but with the addition of the clocked C's i was able to turn it up. when i installed the axle it ended up being too close to the pitman arm so i opted to use some shorter lower links a had from another project Then i could install the mock-up steering the last thing to deal with was the CVD's. the stub shaft is female so it is bigger then a standard shaft which meant i needed to drill the wheel hub out. They are also much longer. To address the length i marked the position of the wheel hub then did some hacking then after shortening the bolt, i was able to secure it all together. it's holding up good so far. Eventually i plan on adding a stud to the scale hubs i had on before and using them as the bolt

Well I've been testing the truck real hard the last couple weeks and found the first weak link. I wanted more power so i jumped up to a 35 turn motor. I've used the T-case without any trouble for years but after upgrading the axles and the tranny the T-case just wasn't up to the task. The gears seem to be ok but the small flanged bearings failed on the input side. Fortunately i had the bearings to replace them unfortunately they failed too after only a few minutes running it. I guess it's time to upgrade the tranny too!

What about drilling the bearing holes out for a bigger bearings on each .those gears with the new power are trying to push away from each other and putting way more pressure on them little bearings . I think it would work . Look at a axial tranny the the center gear has a small bearing but it sees forces from both sides and were all the power goes out they use a significantly larger bearing. Or maybe do three gears with the 2 outside gears with bigger bearings . Just some thoughts love your work bud, that 1/4 elliptical is off the hook . I have seen a few builds like that in 1.1 and it was performing pretty good on what u were beating it on lol . Keep trucking

First i replaced the drive gear. it was really worn and i'm sure added to the problem. I ended up digging into my scrap pile and pulled another shaft from the old 3 speed tranny and cut it down to match Then i replaced the bearing with bronze bushings of the same size. it's not going to jump gears now but won't last for ever. it'll do until i can come up with something better. Now for the next step. I have been planning on slowley replacing my bondo molds with higher quality resin molds so i made an investment in some material and decided to start with the rear quarters since that is where i'm at now with the body. I began with a clean new body. i glued the corners and filled the holes with clay. Then i made the surround to form the mold. Then repeated on the other side. For those wanting to try this, it's not for the impatient. these 2 mold cavities took me about 6 hours to make. Then i decided to make copies of some other molds that were either fragile or that i wanted to change. Next was simply to pour, wait, and release. Than came the resin this gives you an idea of the difference in quality. definitely worth the time and money! Now the mods. These fenders are going to be for this truck so i wanted them bobbed like before. I started by marking with tape to get a 1 in cut then through the saw it went next i sanded the joints and glued them together then i reshaped the lower section and cut out for the tail lite And finally, new skins More later

| Re: Old comp truck turned scale truck (the rebuild, AGAIN!) Oh, so now you want one of these too? Your killing me! LOL! You don't know the half of it! a lot of stretching and shrinking. Now that i have new skins it's time to up the anti. i hated how people would comment at the rear of the truck that it had the "prerunner" look with the fenders hanging from the cage so i decided it was time to make a drop bed. I had made a full bed before on my other scale toyota but this one needs to be bobbed with some refinements. The first order of business was the make the floor. Again i started with a new resin casting from the latex copy and cut the inch out to match the fenders then glued it Next was the inner fenders. With the first bed i did i had a small miscalculation with the molds and made them a bit too short leading to gaps where the flairs are. So to fit it i started by making copies of them. then i sliced it into sections and added styrene to increase the width Then after some sanding i had the new larger mold It might not look like much but it should fill the voids Then i formed the new wheel tubs with the new larger wheel tub i needed to modify the floor so i Checked it to the new fender skins You can see how much shorter the old wheel opening was the new wheel tubs fit much better so after i marked it i trimmed off the raised sections Then formed the floor. Time for bed. more later. |

| Re: Old comp truck turned scale truck (the rebuild, AGAIN!) Well here is some more! With the bed floor done the next step was to fit it. The length is a little longer then the old setup so the bumper had to come off. Now I could test the fit As you can see i also made the back panel. it's the same as the one on my other scale toyota. Next was the support rails. simple formed channels did the trick. the front of the bed will be secured with the tool box so i cut a slot and added a spacer. the rear will be attached just through the support so i added some threaded inserts then i added the mounts to the chassis all mounted up before mounting the floor i added 2 more to support the middle then glued the floor fast and with the inserts the floor stays smooth with the hardware hidden. here is how it looks from below when the glue set i added the fender wells then the fender skins the bumper went back in place with a little extension added the tire rack still fits with the floor in place the shot from below looks pretty cool now some overall shots of the nearly finished bed next to go in was the filler caps for the rear then the tail lite buckets that's it for the bed. the rest of the body is next |

Wow, I've followed your other thread on this truck and it's definately my favorite 1/10 Toyota. Just when I think it can't possibly get any better, you "restore" it. Keep the sheetmetal pics coming. Maybe I missed it, but what are you using for shackle bushings? I think the main reason that leafs don't hold up under severe abuse in the 1/10 world is that they have to locate and support the weight of the truck. With your setup they only support the weight while the links locate the axle, which should make them last much longer. |
