| Old comp truck turned scale truck (the rebuild, AGAIN!) More carnage!
Well another year has passed and it's time once again to rebuild my trusty Toyota. I love this truck too much to let it go and i have some plans for getting yet more scale points For reference here it the last rebuild: old comp truck turned scale truck (the rebuild!) First here it is all pathetic looking after i swiped the axles to use under my Scout project. Then i tore it down to the frame And after assessing the damage noted 2 places that need attention. The one over the passenger side i was able to straighten but the one over the drivers side will need to be replaced Oh and here is the home made T-case still holding up even with sines of wear It still works so i'm going to stick with it. Then i laid out what was left. Here are the parts i'm keeping And the scrap pile Then i blasted the frame and started the surgery Some people would have a hard time doing this. If you followed my last rebuild i just put them on but was never really happy with how the body panels pushed in so easily and i needed room for the drop bed And just a teaser, Bet you can't guess what this is for That's it for now! Aw I think the body's the only good thing goin' for this rig Jokes aside, I do think the "beat up" body looks way cool! If the work you put into that body is any indication of your new incarnation of this rig it'll be awesome. Cheers, Doc |

So cool. Real metal siding to take carnage is as scale as it gets. Chicks dig carnage. Cant wait to see the rebuild!

Before i did any more work on the chassis i decided to beef up the axles. Call me old fashioned but i like the TLT axles i've been using. i want to add a bit more power so when i saw that RC4WD had there aluminum strait axles on clearance i figured it was the perfect opportunity to add some strength. Of course as soon as i got it, i started hacking and took the servo mounts off. Then i shaved the bottom and rounded the edges The only down side, coming from RC4WD, is that the key mounting features don't match the original axle as evident here where you can see the top holes are in different locations This meant i needed a new upper truss. so i whipped one up real quick Then to add strength i drilled and tapped the case And added a 3rd mounting point Also the front of the axle has a block of metal that sticks out where the original lower link mount need to be So i machined the blocks to fit the old lower link mount location and then media blasted the cases then i drilled and tapped for the link mounts then I ordered some stainless strait axles and installed them Brazed and blasted the truss mount and buttoned up the axle without the pinion just for mock-up and threw it under the truck then i also treated the front axle to some upgrades with MIP CVD's, aluminum knuckles, clocked C hubs and Teflon sealed bearings. That's it for now.

I guess it's time to reveal the purpose of the coil. Yes they are going to be used as leaves but in the 1/4 elliptical variety. I liked how the truck worked on the link set-up i had but wanted to get the extra points so i figured i would give this a try. I started by making the plates to mount the leafs then i cut a slot in the chassis for the mounts After some more measuring i figured i needed to cut more out of the chassis Then tacked the mounts in place next i bent the leaves up and placed them in the chassis mount and the old lower link spot on the axle. Now the springs will not work as lower links so the next step will be to add links that parallel the springs. That's all i have so far. Hopefully i'll have it rolling soon so i can see if it works.
