Some of you know I recently purchased a 1:1 '70 FJ40 to replace my '83 pickup which I sold to someone here on RCC. I currently have a 1/10 scale replica of my 1:1 '83. a real scale crawler! action pics pg10 So now I need a 1/10 version of the 1:1 FJ40. I had built one years ago as well as a few FJ45's. Now, they are all gone except my C3 FJ45. Here's where we will start.... I have an original Proline FJ40 body that has been sitting here that I will finally get to use. Chassis will be the OG Yota's which will be modified to the FJ40. With some modifications to the frame I will be able to keep the narrow track width and use the RC4WD Yota axles with a set of Axial Maxxis trepadors. This should keep the tires under the body more and give me the look I want. Steering with the narrow track width and the Trepadors creates some interference issues with the leafs but I have a plan for that. The 1:1 uses an offset t-case as well as offset pumpkin axles so I will be using the RC4WD hammer t-case and two RC4WD Yota front axles. The rear has been modified for straight shafts as wel as correct rotation. First step was to put the housing on my lathe and remove the ends. ![]() I made these to go over the housing ends. I thought about turning the housing down more so the sleeve is the same 12mm o.d. but will go with these for now (I will make new ones to capture the bearings/shafts as these are just for mockup and fitment). When I get the leafs mounted and all bolted up to the chassis I don't thing the difference in tube diameter will be as noticeable as it is now (bugging the crap out of me even though it's only 1mm). ![]() ![]() Something else that I didn't like was the housing. I could go the easy route and just flip the housing but I wanted it to be right. I milled off the cover and milled out the inside of the housing so I could get the correct rotation and keep the spring pads facing up. The cover side will face forward and will be the new mounting face for the pumpkin. Now I need to make a sheetmetal diff cover like the 1:1 has for the rear of the housing. I also drilled through the housing and tapped M2 threads to mount the cover. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by chino63; 03-08-2013 at 02:52 PM. |

Thanks guys, Modifying the rear axle has brought back the fun for me. I don't care for all the cookie cutter stuff. As cool, reliable and fun as they are, I prefer testing the unknown and making something that is unique. Sheldon, thanks, I might have to get one from you at a later date. ![]() | |||

Bad Ass Dean! The axle work looks great so far! You always bring the attention to detail into your builds while keeping it working like a comp rig ![]() |

Minor update, I turned down the housing a bit more and made new tubes that are the same o.d. as the housing. Quick coat of paint on them as well, way better. ![]() ![]() Compared to the stock rear axle. ![]() Last edited by chino63; 03-09-2013 at 09:33 PM. |

Wow, great job so far! I'm excited to actually follow one of you builds, I've read through quite a few of your old builds. Keep up the amazing work, axles looks killer already.
