Default Project AEV Jeep Brute - scratchbuild...

Here's my second try on scratch building.... the first try was a M923 5 ton 6x6 truck....

so... my skills are still rookie level...

the build had completed... and i'm cross posting the build thread over here...

thanks for looking..

----------------------------------------------------------

Finally... found some time to start on the next project...
fell in love with the American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) Jeep Brute....
now trying to make a brute in 1/10... it's going to be a slow slow build... a bit at a time...
was thinking of cutting up a Tamiya Jeep YJ body and continue from there, but thought i should start from scratch... if it fails... then i'll fall back to using the jeep yj body method...
here are some photos of the AEV Jeep Brute

drawn the body on the computer....

the body panels and the front grill....

lazy to print them out, trace on cardboard, cut out the cardboard and trace on the styrene.... so i tried a new method... cut the panels on stickers!

pasted the stickers onto the styrene and trace out the outline... saved a little time...

here's the front grill...

cut up the headlights and the holes in the front grill....

some updates today... midnight oil started burning at 11pm+...
cut out the window panels... drilled some holes at the curved section and dremel-ed the straights...

made a bonnet out of foam boards... laminated 3 pieces together to form the thickness... then sanded it.... mocked up on the panels to see how it looked....

sticking the side of the trucks in position...

followed by attaching the front grill...

further sanded the bonnet and see how it looked....

mocked it up on a spare chassis to make sure the size is ok....
will likely not be using this chassis and wheel set... still undecided whether want to put t-rex 60 or axial axles under it..

thats all for this session....
still long way ahead... foam needs to be reinforced, and more styrene works... etc etc....
thanks for looking.

some minor updates... had a little time this morning to fiddle with the brute....

preparing to cut the front and rear windscreen panel
the shape and scale is based on the Jeep.... but it seems like too rounded for the brute.... hmmm... maybe i should keep the sides straight instead...
in the end, didn't cut it out yet just in case i change my mind....

sanded and coated the bonnet a second time with wood putty.... next round will be more sanding and coating if required.... this should make the foam ready for normal aerosol paint.... i hope! :P

Some updates...
some work done over a few nights...

Ordered an Axial 27T motor for the Brute...

fixed up the spare venom creeper transmission that i had left from the 6x6 build...
mounted the tranny on the aluminium brackets and test fit under the cab...

needed some 60mm shocks... and found a set of spare shocks from my OTA-R31...
so built it up and see if it is usable...

i had also mounted the shocks upside down to save some trouble in additional modifications to fit... :P

the 60mm shocks are still too long... and causing the drive shaft angle to be very steep...

so... had to drill a few more holes to shift down the transmission a little as well as slant the shocks so as to lower the gap between the tyres and the fenders....

Drive shaft angle looks better now... although still a little on the extreme...
once the body weighs down the suspensions... the angles should be good to go...

Here's how the AEV Jeep Brute looks like now...

Till the next updates......

some minor updates....

added an angle bracket in the center of the chassis... this will replace the 2 pieces of styrene sticked onto the chassis previously to guide the body mounting...

added 2 more velco mounts on the bed...
the body will be held onto the chassis via the 3 strips of velcro....
so in the event of very likely accidents and roll overs during the trails...

i just hope the body will pop off the chassis instead of cracking here and there...

that's all for today...

just need some rear dummy lights and it should be ready for mud!
but one thing that i haven't think of .... is the electronics.... hope my estimation of the under hood space for the electronics and batteries is sufficient....

else... would need a 1/10 carryboy utility box in the cab...
thanks for looking!

after a few nights of midnight oil burning....

here are some updates...

styrene-d up a simple winch bumper for the Jeep Brute....

mocked up a bull bar.....

and mocked up a stinger....

decided to go with the bull bar instead of the stinger....
so... bent up the 5mm solid copper rod based on the mock up...

saw off and test fit.... fitted as planned...

mocked up the bull bar with 2 Axial light buckets....

added the spot lamp mounts....

sprayed the bumper black and topped off with matt clear....

spot lamps mounted.... realised there were no extra round spot lamps in the axial kits....
hence, used these....
still prefer round ones though.... but will leave these on for now....

mounted the winch bumper onto the chassis...

mounted the body onto the chassis for some shots....

and here it is back onto the shelf....

next up... need to add some black mesh behind the front grill....

add a simple rear bumper....

and should be able to test run soon...

Some minor updates....

test fitted the electronics....
lipo fits nicely behind the seat area...

choosing a driver for the AEV Jeep Brute....
the purple lady seems to be the most suitable one for the brute and the other 2 drivers seems to be looking up in the sky...

cannibalized one of the seats from my wraith and did up a simple seat bracket for mounting it onto the frame....

test fitted....

next... would need a steering wheel maybe...

Dude that is awesome.

Here is a prime example of what someone can do if they try. The base of this body started out so simple, yet if you look at the end result, you struggle to think it started out as flat sheets of styrene.

Top notch work dude. I would be proud to have that Brute on my shelf...
