Default R|M|D Yota Truggy Build

Well I wanted to do another scale build and this time thought I would try a Trail Finder 2 platform vs the SCX10 platforms I have always had before.

I plan to really try to do some cool scale stuff with this one and give it a heavily weathered look.

The wheels are just on there for mockup, I plan to likely get some Steelies to put on them.

It will end up getting a custom truggy back cage of course.

Anyways, on to the pics!

Added a Cab back and smoothed it out with putty and sprayed it with primer.

Thought I would go with a torn off fender.

Started by taping the cab down to a plank of wood to start cutting the fender off with thread. For a how to use this link

Changed the cab angle to get the other side of the fender.

Took 3 sheets of ABS and glued them together to get some thickness

The easiest way to get the hood angle was just to tape it down and mist some more primer over it.

Used a colored pencil to get the bottom arch, it didn't need to be exact like the hood angle.

I added a couple layers under the section covered by the door to be able to glue it together and have it dimensional. I used a curve comb to get the right internal dimension of the inner door.

I added a couple of other small shaped pieces of ABS. Glued them on and puttied around the edges. Them sanded them down where it looked like one molded piece.

At this point I shot it with primer followed by satin black paint and then applied some rust. Here is is mocked up on the truck. Next step is body paint and weathering.

Got the paint and weathering done last night and today. Photo's just don't do the weathered paint justice.

Started on the rear cage tonight with my buddy JJ's help welding. Still need to put in a couple more crossbars from the cab hoop back as well as toward the tail then clean up the welds and paint it.

Then we start on sliders and bumpers.

I threw some 1.55's on it to see how they looked, I am going to go back to the 1.9's as soon as I get my new ones in.

Thanks! It was a combination of many things. The weathering was done with wet washes of a burnt red, dark green and black. The actual rust was done with a special paint that has powdered iron in it and then a chemical wash that starts the rust process, so it is a true rust that will actually change in color and texture with time as it gets wet. I also in spots have taken and applied a rust wash. Basically take a jar and put some steel wool in it, fill the jar with vinegar and wait a few weeks. The steel wool will dissolve and leave you a jar of very rusty looking liquid that you can use as a wet wash.
