Default myth619's spare parts TJ build

I recently got bit by the TJ bug so with the help from my friend Shinjari I got an unmolested New Bright TJ body. He also set me up with a slightly modified SCX10 chassis to get going with.
I started with:
Axial axels
Axial Trans
Axial Wheels and Bead Locks
A few sets of Flatirons
Axial and Proline shocks & springs
Some 98mm Axial aluminum links
Some misc traxxas rod ends
and a few drive shafts that I hoped would work.

With the plan being to build a stretched and comp cut TJ, I used the sewing thread method to cut the fender flairs off.

Started imagining the wheels base while waiting for a frame

Got a frame and mocked up how high/low the body will sit. I wanted to keep the body a low to the frame as possible and found that it wasn't going to happen with the trans in the stock location so a GCM transfer case was procured from Shinjari ( youll begin to see a reoccurring theme with where a lot of my parts come from) and mounted it to the stock SCX10 center skid.

There ended up being about a 1/4" clearance between the case and the body. NO FLOOR CUTTING

Assembled the links to see how much needed to be cut .

Rear links done

With how the way the frame was modified by two previous owners ago I had to move the center skid forward one set of holes and drill a new hole for the front upper link mount otherwise the links would have been an inch long or the rear axel would have been at the rear bumper.

When I got the frame some modification had been done to it and since I needed it flat I broke out the welder and bent up a filler piece. Good as new.

In the middle pic you can see the axel truss I made and the mock up upper 3 link tab.

Mocking up the steering servo mount and track bar mount. Im using styrene sheet to do my mock up since I can easily tweak it for the best fitment then I use the styrene for my template when I make the final metal part.

You can also see the finished truss/ top link mount.

While cycling the front suspension during the mock up phase I wasn't happy with the amount of up travel it had. I did a few well placed pie cut to frame in front of the shock mounts and was able to raise the rails about 3/8" which allowed the drag link and track bar to clear the frame at full compression and articulation.
You can see the before and after in these pics

Steering Servo Mount and frame side track bar mount done.

Suspension componants clearances

Not sure if y'all noticed the nice, new Proline TSL's( again thanks to Shinjari for finding those for a great deal)

Trans/motor in its future home. Nice and low. The Axial 27 turn is in there for mock up.

Trans mount mocked up

Final trans mount

Trans to Transfer case shaft. Its steep but doesn't bind.

Nice work! I have the same body hanging in my garage, been there for quite a while now! But hopefully tomorrow I get some parts in the mail to put it to use.

I second that, trans mount is right on. Like the mods you did to the front section of the frame to get full travel also.

Thanks. If I push straight down on the front of the frame the front shocks have a little more than an 1/8" left to compress when the steering components hit the frame. When it articulates the shocks will get full compression. The tire will hit the fender before that happens though. I may do a HiLine fender on it before its done.

Boat side time....

I just bent some sheet metal and welded it to the frame.

They also serve as the body mounts.

Along with the boatsides, the rock sliders will mount them and pinch the body between them. The two middle hole will mount the slider to the body and the two end holes will mount the body to the boatsides.

I did the main cage out of 3/16" break line from Vato Zone and soldered it up with SafetySilv 56. I used a 3/16" chain saw file to make all the fish mouths for a nice tight fit at all the tube intersections.

More Cage

I did the small front window bars and the grab handles from a variety pack of music strings that can be bought at Lowes. They come in 6in pieces of various diameters. They can be found in the nut and bolt section under Hobby Parts( I think that's what its called)

If I decide to run a spare tire Ill incorporate the mount off the back of the cage and tie it into a rear bumper of some kind.

That's all the pics for now and Im caught up on the build. If there are any questions about what I did that I didn't go over let me know. Hopefully tonight I can get the front bumper/ winch mount done and some more pics posted.
Thanks for looking!

What's up myth, have you been crawling with the guys up in temecula?

Rig looks good. I'm working on a similar build, a YJ, but I have to wait until I can get my tube work done, as I have no welding skills

Whats up Baja. The last time I crawled with the T-mec guys was the G-6 at Mt Baldy in January. Between work and family I haven't had any time for an all day run. Ive been getting out, maybe, once a month with Shinjari for a couple hours.
Im really happy with how this TJ is coming along. Im taking my time on it, mainly because I don't have an instant budget to buy what I need so I can take my time on building the extras.
Are you doing a build thread on your YJ?

Got a good start on the front bumper.....

Mocked this one up with some card board

Bending the bumper up!

All bent up

Aaaaaand, test fit

Welding and shaping the corners

Grill Hoop

Stinger

Seeing how it looks. I still have to do some reinforcing tubes from the top of the stinger to the grill hoop to keep the stinger from bending when the rig goes over. Im also going to do a Haas style fairlead so I need to do that mount too.

Great job on the TJ. I love these little Jeeps! Super fun to drive and the scale aspect is just awesome. I dig the front bumper for sure. What's the plan for the rear bumper?
