Default Tamiya High-Lift F-350 Buildup....by a newbie- FINISHED!

Thats right.....this is my first every scale build up. Im starting with a new High Lift that I just bought. Still needs paint, esc, and battery. It will be mostly a trail rig. I have never attempted what you are about to see here, not even close. Ive looked at everyones threads and thought.....hell, I should give it a shot.

The lowdown:
Novak XRS ESC
Stock motor
High torque servos
Trinity 4200 NIMH battery
Aluminum rims
Truck will be painted Tamiya Gun Metal

Now I was gonna leave it at that but......I figured I had to do something to help my truck stand out from the rest of the highlifts. My plan so far:

Spare Tire holder- done
Roof Rack- done
Brush Guard- not started
Rock Sliders- not started
Winch- not started
Roof rack lights and headlights- not started
Scale tools(they are 1/6th scale so im not sure how they will work out. I'll get: shovel, axe, rope, flashlight, jerry can, knife, canteen, wooden crates for bed, bumper sticker, and a 12 guage shotgun for good luck)- ordered

I will build everything I need and then paint them together. Please feel free to let me know what you think...or if you have any other ideas of what I can do to make it cooler.

What do you guys think of a snorkel?? Yes/No

Here is the truck w/ aluminum rims:

I dont like the included light bar or the brush guard in front....need to look cooler and be functional. Here is the tire holder.

After I took all these pictures I cleaned up all the joints. Then I will sand them to get ready for paint! Next build will be the roof rack! Post away

Looks very nice, how strong are those solder joints? Strong enough to make an entire tube frame?

They are pretty strong. The bracing helps of course. I dont see why it wouldnt be a good way to make a tube frame. People have done it on the TLT's.

Cool, I might have to try it. I don't have the equipment to weld or braze. But I have plenty of solder.

Once again another update.....
I tried making the trac bar and failed miserably. Working with such small pieces of brass tubing and solder doesnt work well. When I went to attach the bottom long bar, the small pieces of brass for the screws to pass would come away from the piece they were mounted to and then I kept having to try and fix it. I gave up........ Here is as far as I got and quit!

But..................and there always is a but, I made a roof rack tonight. It only too me 3-4 hours, but I made it. I came up with the design as I went along. The only thing I did before is figure out what outer dimensions I wanted. It measures 4 1/2" X 2 1/4". The bottom flat center piece is for mounting it. I was going to run it with only the side bars but decided incase I ever wanted to put lights on it I added a front bar too. Here are pictures of that:

Next up, tomorrow morning I will be making rock sliders. I was checking it out tonight and figured out a way I can make them so that they will be mounted to something solid rather then the body. So functional rock sliders tomorrow are on the menu :nice:
When looking at the pics........note that some of the solder joints are rough but that they will be sanded along with the whole roof rack and tire holder and anything else I make for the truck. All of them will be painted a semi-gloss black, and I think that they will look even better once painted. Let me know how you like them

Sorry I havent been keeping this updated. Im trying to remember what I posted on 3 boards, LOL!!

Well the High Lift is a bit different then from above so what better way to show it then..................PICTURES! Take a few minutes to take it all in, LOL!

All the brass pieces need one last coat to make sure no spot was missed. The body and bumpers still need another coat of primer as that was only thier first one. The picture of the rock slider is only one of them, the other was still drying.

Here are pictures of the body, the brass bits, and the tools:

Here is the new battery placement:

BEST...NEWBIE...EVAR!

Totally sweet work. I love the rack. Are those 1/6 action figure tools/parts? That shovel is pretty. Nice tires too!

LOL, thanks Yep those are 1/6 action figure tools. I ordered a 12 guage shotgun for the back window but its waaay to big and not at all scale at over 6" long. The above parts were the only things that worked. I have to check the website again for a few other things.

How the hell did I miss this??

That build is sweet so far, I love those aluminum rims, if you ever need to unload them I'll be here

I also just found my new battery placement, after I did the body lift I was thinking of a place to move the battery, you just solved it.

Looks good so far. I'm going to get some brass tube to play with too. That's a great place for the pack, I put my lipo there since it's too long to fit in the stock battery holder.

Your soldering those joints right? How strong is it? Or whats the trick to soldering joints and making them stick well?

Thanks

You need to soften your suspension. When you put your front tire on to show the flex, the rear was in the air. Awesome looking project also.
