Super scale lexan body build 2012 Rubicon

Hey guys and gals! I haven't posted much since being a member but, I wanted to share my latest scale build with all of you. I'm planning on modeling my Axial SCX10 Rubincon (kit) after a Rubicon that I found floating around the innernetz. But, instead of spending an arm and a leg to get a hold of a beat up half broken New Bright Rubicon body I've decided to use the included body with the kit. I was inspired not only by the Rubi on the netz but, also by an article in RC Car Action about a writer/editor (not sure which lol) who made his Bronco body look ultra scale by painting the outside of it instead of the usual inside paint job. So, here is where I begin... My initial inspiration...

Now, I've already begun construction. The chassis is complete and it's not much different than your average SCX10 with some minor hop ups and mods. I'll show that later. I started with the grill.

First, a close up of the inspirational grill...

And now, what I have done so far. First I cut out the stock vertical slots in the original grill.

Then, using a scrap piece of lexan I made a grill "frame".

Then, I took an old car stereo speaker grill and cut out a matching shaped and sized mesh grill and glued it all together.

So far, that's all I have done. I already have all the materials to complete this build, minus the dually lights on the hood of the inspiration Jeep (as they're dang near impossible to find, although I have a friend who can make some for me).

For the fenders I'm going to be using a plastic cutting board for material and shaping it with my dremel. I'll post those pictures in this thread as I get to it.

Stay tuned! :D

A lot of work left to do. If you can make it happen, it will be pretty sick! Keep us posted with the progress.8)

Lol yea! This build is mostly about the body so I'm not too concerned about the rest of the chassis matching at the moment. I'll get the other stuff or make it as needed.

I already have the vp lightbar and A-pillar mounts ready to install but that obviously won't happen until much later lol.

The rivets you see will most likely just be paint but, I'll entertain any ideas you all may have.

Thanks for the interest and keep watching! It's a fun build so far!

Looks like it could be an interesting project,
For rivets look into 1/16 solid rivets, you can get a few different head styles. I have used truss head solids on builds before, just drill an appropriate size hole and glue the rivet in from the inside. Hardest part would be drilling the all the holes in the body, but it would look nice when done.

Sorry for the delay guys. Real life getting in the way lately. But I was able to finalize the mechanicals and test drive it at the local crawling spot yesterday. Did awesome. I promise I'll get more done this week.

Thanks for staying tuned!

You can use the heads of sewing straight pins for the rivets. Drill a hole, glue them in and nip the heads off. It looks the part. Here's an example.
