I got bored tonight and started playing with a spare mostly built SCX chassis and half a Twin Hammers cage I had laying around.
I'd been looking for a use for this chassis for ages and since dismantling my trail rig for other purposes i was missing having a basher rig to play with.

After just messing with the cage, chopping some bits off and seeing what i could make it do for me, I stuck it on top of the SCX chassis and immediately a light went off in my head.

In a moment of inspiration I came up with the "Bounce Hammers"

First i just placed the cage on the chassis...

Then i found some Carter Fab panels for the Twin Hammers that I hadnt used (as i opted for the KOH style in the end)..

And then an Axial Exo radiator taken off a different build..

And lastly, a set of RC4WD Compass tyres for that 47" super sized look..

And that is where i stopped

Everything is all just sitting there placed loosely to see how it looks.
I've got plans to cut the chassis rails short which will be the next plan of attack (its easy, just cut off right at the shock hoops).
I'll prob then need to work out how to attach the body to the chassis rails and work out the servo mount/steering links to use.
Electronics will most likley come last along with some cosmetic additions although that might happen randomly along the way.

I now have lots to think about and have been inspired to push on with this build

right now its at 310mm but thats because of the link set being initially setup for a different build idea..
i will play with that as I go along but it seems to suit it atm

what does it look like when the cage is more in a mid-chassis position, like an inch or two forwards ? or a slightly front-chassis position?

here's a pic i took when i first stuck the cage on the chassis, more cab forward and kind of leaning towards the U4 look..

chassis rails have been cut short, servo mounted and steering links in place..
its a very very rough job, all to be neatened up, straightened, tweaked, tuned and adjusted

shocks are now longer but they are also too long, need to find something around 90-95mm with a fairly narrow body (under 16mm, preferred 12-14mm)

cut off the angled rear cage supports and replaced with some links (typical of a Wraith fastback mod) for a cleaner look..
i also stretched the rear of the cage just a tad wider to give clearance to the shocks meaning i can run a bigger shock body now as well

here's the hinged front end, probably a work in progress but its usable for now..

body posts from AX80005 mounted to the chassis rails..

hole cut through the panels for the body posts and clipped on..

bonus flex shot because i'm done with this for tonight...

i felt the panels and body posts a bit of a cheap option and takes away from the bouncer look of the cage..

thats why i modded the rear and added some uprights that attach the back of the cab at the roof line to the chassis rails..
i think this is a more elegant solution, looks better and adds some bar work behind the cockpit

and i can adjust the link lengths to give it a bit more of a stance..
also wheelbase has been pushed out to 313mm and its looking a little better..

now to decide how to attach the front of the hood to the shock hoops..

i want to to use a removable option so i can unpin as the battery will most likely hide in that open space behind the hoops to help push the weight foward

I managed to kill several birds with one stone on the "Bounce Hammers" build today and i'm quite pleased with the results..

- moved the cage forward maybe 3/4" which meant the cage now lined up with existing holes on the rails so i can use the metal standoffs to add another anchor point to the cage
- this also shortened the bonnet closing up that gap and seems to look more in proportion
- i now have a clip under style "quick release" hinged bonnet for the batteries, just needs a tray now
- sleeved the rear cage links with 5/32" alu tube which has brought their OD up to close to the actual cage barwork (still WIP)
- wanted to push the rear tyres outwards, but instead the cage was brought forward which gave the same outcome with no wheelbase change

here's a little photo shoot of where its at now...

This is awesome!! But damn, now I wanna do another build, and my wallet's getting hit from all angles with current builds and house stuff. Great job blending the two together, I can't believe I never thought of this.

I don't know if I might have missed it, but do you have plans for a front bumper? I think a stinger would look sick if you can figure a way out to attach it

nah you didnt miss it.. havent really got plans for a bumper/stinger, although i did hold one there to see if something would work..
i'm not sure i'd like one there to be honest, but it might end up with one

i'm starting to really like the look of this too..
i have some ideas on what to do next, mainly to do with suspension but it could take a little while to get done (no hints just yet :P)

the cool thing for me about this build is so far everything needed was just laying around unused

small progress.. picked up a set of 100mm RC4WD RRD/Rock Krawler shocks from a mate
have just been playing with shock angles and mounting locations, so its all very much mocked up for now

here's a link to the shocks..
RC4WD Rock Krawler RRD Emulsion Scale Dual Spring Shocks (100mm)

this will soon need either custom shock hoops or a full chassis rail, but more on that later

here's a pic, same same but different...

i've also now punched a 3mm hole in the tyres, much better feeling...

shock oil was also played with, seems those shocks need something more like a light diff oil so i've got to 1200cst front and 2000cst rear

Keep it up, looks better and better every update

Can you show a pic or describe the "quick release" bonnet system, at the shock mounts and cab area ?

You need one of these....

Parma 1/8th scale motor out of a model kit. More info can be found in this build thread.

Oh, very nice mash up. Love the side profile!

I am big fan of mixing up different trucks to make something truly unique. Now you have me wanting to build a version of this up, when I don't even need another truck!
